Urban Nebula – an installation by Zaha Hadid Architects
The vision for the Urban Nebula installation designed by Zaha Hadid Architects was to explore the potential of pre-cast concrete as a medium for repetitive and fluid form. By combining traditional repetitive pre-cast moulding techniques with contemporary computer numerical control (cnc) machine moulding, a system of standard elements has been created in which each individual component has a unique variation. “These new manufacturing processes play an important role in the architectural language of fluidity and porosity evident in our work, and an essential element in the sculptural sensuality of the piece.” states Hadid.
Taking its name from the form of a nebula gas, the individual elements of the piece create a fluidity that resonates with the structure of a nebula, yet presents an enigmatic contradiction by describing concrete in this way - a material typically perceived to be inert.

Wonder Wall at Selfridges
The first Wonder Wall by architect Zaha Hadid reflects her role as a pioneer in linking art with architecture. The design of the perspex panels across the six cabinets derives from her seminal London painting Malevich’s Tektonik (1976-77) – and positions her objects of inspiration in their own unique landscape. Some of the inspirational themes explored include natural forces such as fluidity, gravity & elasticity.
Zaha Hadid: Architecture & Design
Exhibition closes 25 November 2007
“Her buildings are fluid and theatrical – structurally daring and spacially inventive, they sweep you up and astound you…The Design Museum show documents an architect at the peak of her career.” Edwin Heathcote, The Finacial Times.
“The exhibition reveals the broad stretch of Hadid’s imagination into painting drawing, furniture and even concept cars. In the paintings, in particular, her work assumes a surreal, abstract beauty. But the show also marks a key point in Hadid’s career, where she moves into a realm or realized achievement… There seems little doubt that Hadid will go down in history as one of the great architectural pioneers, and this exhibition helps confirm that view.” Dominic Bradbury, The Daily Telegraph.
