The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is the annual event for architects worldwide. The Festival will celebrate the work, concerns and aspirations of the international architectural community, during a three-day event taking place in Barcelona, Spain between 22 - 24 October 2008.

The Festival will be an annual opportunity to compare and contrast the extraordinary range of designs created by a profession which has always looked beyond national borders to the wider world of architectural culture.

At the heart of the Festival will be the biggest architectural awards programme in the world.

About The Awards
The 2008 awards are for buildings completed between 01 January 2007 and 20 June 2008. Buildings in any country, by architects of any nationality, are eligible for entry.

International juries will shortlist the best entries in 96 building types, grouped into 16 categories. All shortlisted architects will present their work to live juries and audiences at the Festival, competing against each other to become category winners.

Category winners will compete against each other in front of a super-jury, to win the "best in show" prize, the first architectural Prix de Barcelona.

All entries in the awards will be exhibited on site at the Festival in a gallery modelled on the Barcelona grid system, and after the Festival all entries will be permanently available on the WAF website

The Festival will reflect the increasingly international nature of architecture, while also celebrating its regional roots. It will be possible, through the exhibition of awards entries, to compare and contrast different approaches to the design of 96 building types in the 16 categories.

In addition to the awards gallery, other elements of the Festival will include:
- Thematic exhibition, "Creativity, Capacity, Responsibility"
- Live ideas charrette for architecture schools
- Architect-nominated product showcase
- City tours and social events
- Networking

Activities at the Festival
Entry Gallery
A gallery containing all entries into the Awards, laid out as the city grid of Barcelona, complete with Diagonal will enable Festival delegates to browse through entries at their own leisure. Uniquely, the exhibition will be opportunity for delegates to view global design trends and quality architecture from around the world in one place.

Entries will be organised into categories and sub-categories. You can then see the shortlisted entries being presented live in the presentation rooms on days 1 and 2 of the Festival.

Live Presentations
All 256 shortlisted entrants (16 in each of 16 categories) will present their work to live juries and audiences at the Festival, competing against each other to become category winners.

Category winners will compete against each other in front of a super-jury, to win the "best in show" prize, the first architectural Prix de Barcelona.

Product Showcase
Architects love good products, and this area of the Festival will help you find more star products, nominated by your peers. If you have a super product that you would like to nominate to appear in the product showcase on-site at the Festival, click here:

As this is an architect-nominated product showcase we can only accept nominations from architects. Please note that we will need to contact all nominees to verify product nominations. Any nominations submitted without contact information will not be accepted.

Student Charrette
The Festival will invite architectural students from 10 of the worlds best known architectural schools to participate in an intensive two day live design competition concentrating on a design brief to be agreed with the City of Barcelona.

The teams of students, lead by a well known architect, will have a limited time period to generate conceptual ideas and will then present to a panel of judges and a winning team selected. All of the work generated will be on display on day 3 of the Festival.

Thematic Exhibition
The thematic exhibition will examine ways in which architects are addressing problems and opportunities in the built environment; how collaboration with clients, city planners and other professions informs what they do; the possibilities created by new technology and techniques (for example parametric modelling); and questions of sustainability. Issues likely to be touched on will include city growth, housing, and energy.

Plenary Lectures
There will be three plenary lectures at the Festival, one at 6pm each day. The lectures will be from key figures in the industry and will provide powerful insights into the issues shaping architecture today.

Networking
The Festival will be an ideal opportunity for architects, to meet their peers from around the world. Whether you wish to connect with other architects working in the same region as you, or architects working in the same practice area, but in different countries, it will be easy to meet. Our online networking platform allows delegates to allied professionals and clients

Social Events
There will be a number of different drinks receptions and social events at the Festival.

Study Tours
There will be study tours as part of the Festival.
