The idea of sealing things was an incredible development for human
technology. Over the years, there have been all kinds of new-tech closures, from
buttons and Mason Jars, to zippers and zip-closure bags. As we blogged before,
the team at Clip-n-Seal has developed a cool new closure system to add to the
designer arsenal. We thought they might make a good candidate for a bonfire. A
sort of Tag-Team bonfire, if you will. Plus, this is a bigger fish to fry, so
we're giving you until January 15th to work out something amazing. Sound cool?
Then Go for it
Without further ado, we proudly present Bonfire #3: Clip-n-Seal it!
Problem Brief
In our interview today they talked about how the product has been used in a
number of surprising ways. Clip-n-Seal is also featured in the current issue of
Inventables DesignAid, but not everyone has the resources to subscribe to that
publication (us included). So we got together with Clip-n-Seal and we’re
offering samples of the clip technology at a major discount to see what awesome
new concepts you can dream up for its use.
Sponsors
Besides the Clip-n-seal folks, we'd like to thank the guys at Basecamp.
Basecamp is a web-based, blog-like tool that lets you manage projects (or simply
ideas) and quickly create client/project extranets. It lets you and your clients
(or just your own internal team) keep your conversations, ideas, schedules,
to-do lists, and more in a password-protected central location.
Contest Description
Design a new product using the Clip-n-Seal in an interesting, unusual or
thought-proving way. We know it can close all sorts of bags, but try to think
beyond that –Footwear? Purses? Outdoor equipment? Maybe even toys or medical
devices; you tell us!
Winners will recieve the mother of all Clip-n-Seal assortments - take a look
below for details.
Contest Details
Clip-n-Seals are currently available in a variety of sizes, but they can be
run at practically any length or diameter, so don't constrain yourself to the
existing sizes. However, please utilize the existing rod and clamp design –
we're looking for new ways to use for a Clip-n-Seal, not a transformation of the
product.
Complete size information, previous uses, photographs and illustrations are
available in our Clip-Seal asset pack(.zip - 308kb).
Sample Clip-n-Seals
The Clip-n-Seal has a mechanical action that, while really simple, might not
be obvious by looking at pictures of it. We think holding a Clip-n-Seal in your
hands will help inspire you and contest entrants are eligible to receive one set
of sample Clip-n-Seals at cost. The sample pack contains: 1 Large, 1 Medium, 1
Small and 1 Mini
Entrants are eligible to receive this sample pack at a substantial discount
(seriously, like pocket change here) plus shipping. Obviously, you don't have to
buy a sample pack to enter your awesome idea, but it's a pretty sweet deal if
you're interested.
To get the sample pack we'll need you to provide some proof that you are a
designer who intends to participate in this contest (we can't have everyone
ordering these). Please email Clip-n-seal with a scanned image of your business
card or a link to your firm's website. If you are a student and do not have
either of these items, feel free to email us and convince us that you aren't
just looking to get some Clip-n-Seals on the cheap:
[email protected].
Entry Requirements
Your solution may take the form of a computer model, computer/marker
rendering, drawing, or physical prototype, but all submissions must be made in
the form of E-Mailed 1024x768 Jpeg images. You may send up to three images to
convey your design, and presentation will also be taken into account in the
judging, so compose your submission as nicely as possible. Remember that images
will probably be scaled down for online display, so don't put too much small
text in the images, it will work better in the written description. If the item
can be used, try to show it being used. Please also include a written
description of your concept and it's use. Limit your description to 300 words or
less.
Please Pre-Register by sending your name, and state or country to
idfuel(at)gmail.com with questions or comments.
Entries should also be sent to
www.idfuel(at)gmail.com
Judging and Prizes-
Entrants must register by Saturday, January 8, 2005. All entries must be
received by Saturday, January 15, 2005. January might seem like a long ways off,
but with the craziness that the holidays bring the time will fly by! And don't
forget, it will take some time for the samples to reach you.
The IDFuel and Clip-n-Seal Teams will judge all entries based on form, fun,
function, presentation, and originality.
First Prize - The Clip-n-Seal Uber-Collection: Large 10 pack, Medium 10 Pack,
Small 10 Pack, Skinny Mini 10 Pack
Second Prize - The Clip-n-Seal Anthology: Two (2) variety 3-Packs: 2 Large, 2

Runner(s) Up - The Clip-n-Seal Sampler: One (1) variety 3-Pack: 1 Large, 1

and will be publicized in as many ways as we can pull off.
The Blah Blah
Hi-Res / Lo-Res
Although initial entries are submitted online at 1024 x 768 (72 dpi),
finalists and winners will be required to provide high-resolution artwork (300
dpi) – if you really can't swing it, no sweat, we can work something.
Originality
All submissions must your own work, and must be original for this
competition, or significant modification to your own previous work.
Rights
Intellectual property rights will remain with the designer, although IDFuel
and Clip-n-Seal retain the nonexclusive right to publish or display any
competition entry in any format, exhibition or publication (like posters, or
online magazines, or whatever).
Clip-n-Seal may or may not choose to engage you about marketing your idea. By
reviewing your concept, no agreement to compensate is being entered into by
Clip-n-Seal or IDFuel. Clip-n-Seal will not market your idea without your
consent and agreement.
Eligibility
This competition is open to all designers, students and enthusiasts
worldwide. Obviously, the IDFuel team might enter, but they can't win.
