Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Architectural Design Excellence Competition 2002 Announced

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY (November 1, 2001)

Professor Raymond Lifchez, Chair of the Berkeley Prize Committee, announces the fourth annual Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Architectural Design Excellence Competition, sponsored by the Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley.

The Berkeley Prize Competition is an online essay contest (www.berkeleyprize.org) open to undergraduate architecture majors in accredited schools of architecture throughout the world. The focus of the Berkeley Prize is to support the study of Architecture as a Social Art. For the 2002 competition, students will consider the role of the street in fostering social life.

This year's competition asks the question: Throughout history, the Street has served as a mediator between our public and private lives. The attached photographs are vivid examples of how this occurs. With rapid change occurring today in every culture, the traditional social value of the street is also undergoing change and in many instances losing this human element. As an architect how do you address this issue?

Entries must be submitted in English. There is a limit of one entry per student. No group entries are accepted. This year's total purse is $3000.00 (U.S.) to be divided at the discretion of the Prize Committee.

To qualify, students submit a 500-word proposal of their papers between November 1 and 30, 2001. Semifinalists selected from these entries will expand their statements into a 2500-word essay. The Berkeley Prize jury will select the winners.

Last year, undergraduates studying architectural design in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States were invited for the first time to participate in the Competition via the Internet. This year, students world wide, who meet the eligibility requirements and who submit their essays written in English, are invited to participate.

"The Berkeley Prize was founded to both acknowledge excellence in architecture writing and thought among undergraduate students and to encourage lively and far-ranging discussion and examination of the social aspects of design. The idea of social responsibility in architecture seems to remain at the very least a nascent priority in the minds of those beginning their careers in architecture. Profession and Schools of Architecture take note!"
