Your Big Idea
Q: Does my Big Idea have to be previously unpublished?
A: No, but please make sure you tell us its publication history.

Q: In the application, you ask, “What makes it a BIG idea?” What do you mean?
A: We would like you to explain why the idea you are proposing is important or necessary. How will it improve life and better the world?

Q: I am not sure if my idea qualifies. How can I find out?
A: E-mail a brief explanation of your idea to [email protected]  and we will let you know if it qualifies.

The Business Plan
Q: How detailed should the business plan be? What are the judges looking for?
A: The business plan should be as detailed as possible without exceeding 200 words. We recommend explaining how you plan to invest the $10,000. The business plan should show the judges that you have thoroughly researched your idea and are prepared to execute it. They understand that most submitted ideas are works-in-progress. Please be honest about where you are in the process and how you will use the prize money to take it to the next level.

Q: Do you have to invest the money in your idea?
A: We encourage you to do so.

Artwork
Q: Should I include electronic versions of all the materials I submit?
A: No, please just submit a CD with a few (two or three) publication quality images. If your project is selected as the winner or as a runner-up, we will use the submitted images for publication purposes. We may also ask you to submit additional artwork at that time.

Q: What resolution should the submitted images be?
A: 300 dpi at 10 x 12 inches.

Q: My idea is in the form of a written 3-page paper, rather than a physical product. Can I submit the paper instead of the mentioned drawings, renderings, photos, etc?
A: Yes, you can submit a brief paper, but we strongly recommend you include visuals.

Eligibility
Q: Are students eligible to enter? What if I don’t have a portfolio of built work to include with my application?
A: Yes, we encourage students to enter. In place of a portfolio of built work, you may submit examples of your work from design studio.

Q: I’ve been out of school for more than ten years, but I’ve never worked as an independent designer. Do I qualify?
A: Yes, as long as your design firm (if you have one) is less than ten years old.

Q: I read through the guidelines and I’m still unsure if I qualify.
A: Please send an E-mail to [email protected]  explaining why you think you do or do not qualify. Our publisher will make the final determination.

Entry Fees
Q: It states in the guidelines that residents of New Jersey, Vermont, Tennessee, Arizona, and Maryland do not have to pay an entry fee. I have never seen this before. Does this law apply to all design competitions?
A: It applies to all contests that a resident of those states enters. We’re not sure if it is true for all design competitions.

Q: I am an international applicant and cannot send a personal check. How do I go about sending an international money order to cover the application fee?
A: Please E-mail Laurie Manfra at [email protected]  and let her know that you would like to send an international money order. She will send detailed instructions.

Q: Why do you require an entry fee? Are you making a profit from the competition?
A: The money collected from entry fees helps offset the cost of running the competition. We do not make a profit.

Past Winners
Q: May I view examples of past winning entries somewhere online?
A: Yes. Please visit our Next Generation website, which is a section of MetropolisMag.com.

Winning and Copyrights
Q: When will you announce the winner, and how will the winner be notified?
A: We will announce the winner in the June 2005 issue of Metropolis, which hits newsstands on or around May 15, 2005. The winner will be notified by phone on or around the third week in February.

Q: Will any portion of the application be made public?
A: Yes, your name and your idea will be published in print in Metropolis and online at MetropolisMag.com.

Q: What about copyrights? Should I be concerned that someone might steal my idea?
A: We believe that great designers have many great ideas. Sometimes you have to throw your idea out there and see what comes back. And of course, there are risks associated with doing this. We encourage you to take the risk. If you are very concerned, we suggest you do some research on copyrights, patents, and trademarks and get acquainted with copyright laws before submitting your application. If you come up with a question and the answer to it is unclear in our guidelines, please E-mail it to [email protected] .

Q: In your competition rules and guidelines it states that Metropolis will have full rights to use the work as they see fit without any prior approval from the designer. Does this mean that Metropolis assumes the right of ownership to the submitted design or product idea?
A: No, it does not mean that Metropolis assumes the right of ownership of the idea. It means that you are granting us physical and electronic rights to the images submitted. We have the right to publish them freely, and without notifying you or further obtaining your permission. By nature of the competition you agree to license us to use this information on all materials related to the competition, including in the magazine, on the web site, and in any supplementary published material. If you are selected as a winner or runner-up, we will ask you to sign a document that grants us such rights.
