Healthcare buildings are fundamentally about people - patients, visitors, families and staff. In a patient - focused NHS, the relationship between spaces and the people who use them comes into sharper focus. Healthcare provision is shifting away from hospitals on the outskirts of society, both socially and geographically, towards integrated community services. But despite clear policy directives from the Government, the practical implications of the move to community - based care are less apparent.

The Architects’ Journal’s Community Healthcare Design conference aims to address the ambiguity surrounding NHS capital works planning. AJ’s third annual healthcare event builds on the success of previous years, combining policy forecasts with a clear view of the architect’s role in delivering modern, flexible facilities. Leading architects in the healthcare field will present the latest thinking on creating healing, welcoming environments in a range of buildings – from secure mental health units to community care centres. Hear how quality, considered design has contributed to the overall success of recently completed projects from those involved.
