The FT ULI Sustainable Cities Awards & Conference will take place on 16th June 2008 and bring together international experts in sustainability and urban development along with key regional leaders and decision makers to explore which sustainability solutions are really working in the global cities of 2008 - and to recognise outstanding programs that advance the application of sustainability principles to land use.

Attendees will discover what financial models and innovative sustainable approaches are putting business and cities ahead in today's challenging market and learn from global best practice that sets the standard for true world class sustainability recognised through our awards programme.

Property developers; investors; lenders; owners; real estate market and business consultants; design and construction professionals; public sector officials; planners; urban designers; academics; advisers; and other public and private sector representatives interested in learning about opportunities in sustainable development should attend the conference.

Following the conclusion of the conference, the winners of the FT ULI Sustainable Cities Awards -now underway with a 11 April 2008 deadline for entry- will be announced. An international jury will recognise up to seven of the most innovative programmes based on global relevance, strategic value to companies and communities, and enhancement to the environment.

08:45 - 09:00: Welcome by Conference Chairs

09:00 - 10:00: Dodging Disaster - Towards a Sustainable Urban Future
Session Moderator: Greg Clark, Senior Fellow EMEA/India, ULI

This session looks at the link between sustainable cities and built environment and the long term public push for low carbon living. Our speakers discuss the truth about zero carbon and what is required for cities to be truly sustainable and not just green.

Dr. David Strong (Chief Executive, Inbuilt)

10:00 - 11:30: Show me the Money - Creating Value from Responsible Investing
Session Moderator: Greg Clark (Senior Fellow EMEA / India, ULI)

Ignoring sustainability when taking investment decisions risks underwriting a minefield. This session examines how sustainable cities are shaped by investors. It explores the impact of sustainability requirements on specific projects and investment portfolios and asks the questions: How do I measure the sustainability of my portfolio? Am I building a sustainable portfolio that tenants will lease in 5-10 years as legislation and public opinion continue to move forward?

- Liz Peace (Chief Executive, British Property Federation)
- Jeff Jacobson (CEO, LaSalle Investment Management)
- Chris Brown (Chief Executive, Igloo Regeneration)
- James Cameron (Vice Chairman, Climate Change Capital)

11:30 - 12:00: Networking Tea and Coffee Break
12:00 - 13:00: Leading the Way Forward - Developers at the Vanguard of Change
Session Moderator: Greg Clark (Senior Fellow EMEA / India, ULI)

Sustainability is the buzzword of 2008, a media drumbeat that has compelled business to demonstrate their sustainability credentials. Who are the real champions of sustainability in the real estate industry? This session presents best practice examples from the world’s leading developers. Which cities are making the right moves to attract them? What are the implications for developers of not embracing sustainability?

Gerald D. Hines (Chairman, Hines)

13:00 - 14:30: Networking Lunch
14:30 - 14:45: Sustainable Cities: Celebrating Success

Introducing the inaugural FT ULI Sustainable Cities Awards Programme and 2008 Jury

Awards Chair: Dr. Reinhard Kutscher (Chairman of the Management Board, Union Investment Real Estate), John Ridding (Chief Executive, Financial Times)

14:45 - 16:15: Visions for Design, Innovation and Social Infrastructure: What will a Sustainable City Look Like?

Session Moderator: Greg Clark (Senior Fellow EMEA / India, ULI)

In 2004 the EU working group on Urban Design for Sustainability agreed a common vision of urban design for sustainable development: “beautiful, healthy, socially integrated and inclusive places that promote equitable economic development.” This vision is easily frustrated by tangled legislation, slow planning systems, a lack of awareness and “the complexity of the holistic vision of sustainable development.” This panel of international experts share their visions for achievable, genuine sustainability.

- Christopher Choa (Principal, EDAW Inc.)
- Stephen Jordan (Managing Director, London & Continental Stations & Property)
- Lee Polisano (President, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates)
