ExperimentaDesign is the international Biennale dedicated to design, architecture and creativity and positions itself as a forward-thinking organization, analyzing and fostering contemporary cultural practices, with a keen eye for reflection and experimentation.

ExperimentaDesign promotes the creation of laboratories collaborating with a network of international parties in the development of strategic synergies between cultural agents from a wide variety of creative fields.

ExperimentaDesign programs possibilities, challenges participants, crosses paths, questions, experiments, as much as it creates presentations and exhibitions.

ExperimentaDesign reflects on aesthetics, ethics, social cohesion, industry, sustainability and economy as much as it focuses on design and related disciplines.

ExperimentaDesign is about people and ideas, more than about products and markets. The programme is designed to provide insight and incentive, both to specialized and professional audiences and to a wider public less familiar with the intimate discourses of design.

ExperimentaDesign is a plural and inclusive event, a world-wide platform that celebrates and promotes transdisciplinarity, critical reflection and creative work on all levels.

The first four editions of ExperimentaDesign took place in Lisbon. In 1999 the Biennale explored disciplinary intersections in and around design. In 2001, a series of events critically explored the notion of Modus Operandi - the designer as cultural agent. In 2003, the Lisboa Biennale was themed Beyond Consumption, and surveyed design culture from the point of view of those who use, consume and experience it. The theme of ExperimentaDesign 2005 completed a cycle: The Medium is the Matter focused on the media and materials designers use to bridge the gap between creator and receiver.

Now, ExperimentaDesign has entered a new stage, expanding its stage of action to two European capitals, Lisbon and Amsterdam, with events in both cities in alternating years.

"ExperimentaDesign Amsterdam 2008" highlights urban culture as the playground for the global citizen. The world’s cities are not only home to over half of the world’s population, they are also a metaphor for today’s cultures and a testing ground for new forms of conviviality and interaction.

As is previous editions of the Biennale, "ExperimentaDesign Amsterdam 2008" offers an intense, diversified programme of multidisciplinary events, this time centered on the theme "Space and Place - Design for the Urban Landscape”, which promises to turn the spotlight on innovative urban design as a process of social action and exchanges.

The opening week of ExperimentaDesign Amsterdam 2008, from 18 to 21 September 2009  is the ultimate place to be, as Amsterdam launches its programme of exhibitions, open talks, conferences and urban interventions. Four days of lively exchange of ideas and play held in emblematic venues throughout the Dutch capital.
