Eschewing any particular architectural style or building material, Kengo Kuma aims “to create a certain type of place and a certain type of condition that can be experienced by the human body,” arriving at “an architecture that utilizes everything, from traditional techniques to the most advanced technology.” Kuma began independent practice in 1987, establishing Spatial Design Studio. In 1990, he established Kengo Kuma & Associates, which has since grown to over 75 designers and supporting staff with offices in Tokyo and Paris. His extensive body of built work includes the Water/Glass Guest House, Atami, Japan; Hiroshige Museum, Bato-machi, Japan; Stone Museum, Nasu, Japan; LVMH Osaka; Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum; Suntory Museum, Tokyo; Great (Bamboo) Wall, outside Beijing; and Asahi Broadcasting Headquarters, Osaka. Current projects include residential, commercial, and institutional work in Japan and abroad.

Kengo Kuma has received numerous awards from the Architectural Institute of Japan, as well as the The Marble Architecture Award for the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum, the Tougo Murano Prize for Bato-machi Hiroshige Museum, the International Stone Architecture Award for the Stone Museum, and the International Architecture Awards for the Best New Global Design for the Chokkura Plaza and Shelter. His work has been widely published and exhibited. In 2005, Princeton Architectural Press published the monograph, Kengo Kuma, Selected Works.
