Explore key projects from leading Istanbul-based practice, Tabanlioglu Architects. Centred on a film installation, the exhibition brings their work to life, focussing on 19 of their domestic projects under four themes: media, boulevard, culture and beyond.

Istanbul based architecture practice Tabanlıoğlu are to showcase a major retrospective of their work at London’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in a special collaboration with celebrated Japanese visual artists WOW Inc.

Media relates to the radical restructing of this industry, form printing plants to TV studios. Boulevard shows how pioneering residential developments can sit alongside the corporate skyscrapers of the main axis to Istanbul's central business district. Culture reveals how their renovation of the Ataturk Cultural Centre from 1956 and their project for the first Modern Museum of Turkey, has seeded major regeneration. Finally, Beyond looks at works from stadiums to major urban complexes in both East and West Turkey.

For Istanbul and Beyond, Tabanlıoğlu worked with renowned Japanese visual artists WOW Inc. on to create an immersive ‘3D’ video installation that fills the gallery space and reveals Tabanlıoğlu’s architectural projects in a new fresh and engaging way.

To accompany the RIBA exhibition Tabanlıoğlu has produced T- Projects a special folio of work designed by celebrated Dutch book designer Irma Boom.

T-Projects is a 400-page, full colour 120 w x 170 h mm, soft cover book in English, edited by Pamela Johnston, AA. In addition to Tabanlıoğlu’s photographic archive the book features buildings photographed by international artists such as; Helen Binet, Cemal Emden, Murat Germen, Thomas Mayer and Jeroen Musch.

Talking about the installation, Kosuke Oho, Creative Director, WOW Inc. explains: "You cannot explore the reality of an architectural work merely by relying on its models, plans or photographs. It is difficult to understand the quality of the design and the architect’s vision only through their exhibition, disconnected from the location itself. The site should be experienced first hand."

Kosuke Oho adds: "We will reveal to you the various hidden details of each architectural design. As you pass through, you will discover something new from a viewpoint that people never usually see, and you will feel the sensation that you are floating through, and are surrounded by, the site itself."

The exhibition debuts in London and will be followed by a world tour which includes cities such as Holland, Austria, and Tokyo. The exhibition: Istanbul and Beyond runs from the 20 November until 22 December 2008 and can be enjoyed at Gallery I of RIBA, Portland Place London.
