The Institute for Sustainable Design at The Cooper Union was created in 2008, with support from philanthropist Jack Rudin, as a resource for education, research, and public understanding of the principles and methods of sustainability in all design disciplines. Central to the mission of the Institute is the development of innovative pedagogies in architecture, art, and engineering that will be models for the transformation of learning and practice for a sustainable future.

David W. Orr is the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics in the Environmental Studies Program at Oberlin College. He is also a James Marsh Professor at large at the University of Vermont. He holds a B.A. from Westminster College, an M.A. from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of five books and has published over 150 articles in scientific journals, social science publications, and popular magazines. The recipient of numerous awards, he is best known for his pioneering work on environmental literacy in higher education and his recent work in ecological design.
