With a proposal and vision for the rebuilding of New Orleans, Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne of practice Morphosis is one of the six participants in the "Newer Orleans" exhibition in the NAI. This exhibition presents plans for the reconstruction of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. In his lecture, Mayne will shed further light on his design for a central mediatheque and give his views about the future of the city.
Mayne's motto for the future of New Orleans is a cogent one: "A shrinking city is in fact a richer, denser, more intense city." Aware that the city has lost half its population, his design makes the case for a specific strategy. He proposes first radically shrinking the city, and then allowing controlled growth in a number of key zones. This, he believes, is the only way to beat the socioeconomic and ecological problems.
