Istanbul is a port city. its geograpy is defined by
the sea which surrounds it. Citizens utilize the sea in a limited manner:
transportation via boats and ferries still prevail. Fish culture is still alive
though limited.
However the city consumes the water rather passively?
As a result, Istanbul is no longer a city consuming the full potential of water
as it should be...
The prosed design does not belong to a spesific site
in Istanbul. On the contrary, it assumes the coast of the city as the site. It
invites the citizens being actively involved in the water culture. It is a
proposal that attributes the meaning to the sea. it aims to achive its goal
through a modest and ephemeral design.
The main idea öf the project is to create a PIug and
Play situation, a modest intervention to the city. Two units come together in
order to create a new entity. The fixed unit (host) gives life to the other -
the floating platform (guest). The host lodges the basic minimum services such
as wc, kitchenette and energy supply.
Each floating platform is simpiy constructed on a
repair barge which is available in shipyards of Golden Horn. The platforms are
pulled via tugboats, having a total space which can be used for varying needs
such as meetings, charity fairs, workshops, temporary exhibitions.
PIug and Play points are proposed to be managed by the
municipal initiative. Their numbers and locations will be decided with public
participation. The project aims to create meeting points for urban regeneration
and citizen participation. Open to the consumption of the city, implanted at the
very edge of the water...
