"Designing for Change" Conference
25 Ekim 2004, Marriott Grosvenor Square - Londra

Following the great success of last year’s European Hotel Design Awards and Conference, the organisers are bringing the events together again this year - on Monday, 25 October at the Marriott Grosvenor Square in London. The only event of its kind in Europe, it will comprise a Conference, entitled “Designing for Change”, which will be held during the day and an Awards dinner and ceremony in the evening. In addition, an exhibition showcasing products and services for the hotel design industry will run alongside the Conference. Last year the Event attracted some 250 delegates to the Conference and 550 guests to the Awards dinner.

The Conference, comprising panels and keynote presentations, is intended to be a day of lively debate on a broad range of issues related to hotel design and development. Session topics will include “Wake Up Call!” organised in conjunction with the UK hotel and design publication, Sleeper. A panel of leading figures from across the European hotel sector, chaired by Patrick Reardon of Reardon Smith Architects, will challenge the presumptions of design today and discuss some of the views put forward to Sleeper in the preceding months. Other sessions will cover design copyright issues, the future of spas, demographic changes, casinos, the power of the brand and a keynote interview with Sir Rocco Forte and Olga Polizzi.

Categories for the European Hotel Design Awards will include: Architecture: Best Hotel (new build, conversion or extension); Interior Design: Best New Hotel, Best Public Area, Best Guestroom and Best Spa and Leisure Environment; The Innovation Award; The Lighting Award; The Test of Time Award and The Outstanding Achievement Award. There will also be the Reardon Smith Student Award for the Best Design of a Hotel Spa. Sandi Toksvig, the well-known comedienne, actress and author has been confirmed as the compere of the Awards ceremony.

The judging panel will comprise Grace Leo-Andrieu of G.L.A. International, Steve Kennard of Parkview International, Amanda Rosa of The Columbus Brand, Guy Dittrich - European hotel design journalist, Chris Rouse of CB Richard Ellis Hotels, Matt Turner of Sleeper, Graham Boynton - travel editor for The Daily Telegraph, Nick Hoggett of DPA Lighting, Simon Wigzell of BAA Lynton and Mark Jones of The Eden Project. Jonathan Manser of Manser Associates will be the chairman.

Winning projects over the last two years have included the Delle Arti Design Hotel, Italy (Best New Hotel - Architecture, 2002), Hotel Amigo, Brussels (Best Bedroom/ Bathroom Design, 2002), Hotel Aleph, Rome (Best New Hotel - Interior Design, 2003), City Inn Westminster, London (Best New Hotel - Architecture 2003), Park Hyatt, Paris-Vendome (Best Public Areas, 2003), Intercontinental Hotel, Berlin (Best Spa & Leisure Environment, 2003) and the Haus Rheinsberg Hotel, Lake Rheinsberg, Germany (Innovation Award, 2003). In addition, Ken McCulloch, founder of the Malmaison, Columbus and Dakota hotel groups and Grace Leo- Andrieu of GLA International, consultants to luxury independent hotels worldwide, have both been honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award.

“In the two years since the Awards came together with the Conference, the Design Event has significantly grown in terms of its Europe-wide  perspective, range of issues debated and the great party in the evening celebrating hotel design,” says Jonathan Worsley Director of CB Richard Ellis Hotels, one of the organising companies. “It is the only event in Europe that so successfully brings together the hotel and design communities.”

In addition to CB Richard Ellis Hotels, the organisers are Hotel Spec, The Architects Journal and Battle Associates. Reardon Smith Architects is the Foundation Sponsor.
