Tarih: 28 -30 Ekim 2004
Yer: Tongji Üniversitesi, Şangay - Çin
Aim
Studies and preservation of Asian Modern Architecture have emerged as integral
parts of Asian Urban Studies and Local Heritage preservation. They are also
critical for deeper understanding of the nature and processes of
industrialization, urbanization, modernization of Asian cities and regions which
have developed through an era of colonization, for recognition of historic
values of urban forms and architectural styles grew out of it, and for
explorations of distinguishing Asian concepts and practices of heritage
preservation. mAAN 4th International conference in Shanghai will be centered on
this aim and seek communications and expansion of new research fields, with
various types of discussion (position, technical, historical, theoretical) from
various points of views.
Background
mAAN was set up with the spirit of equality, friendship, freedom, and openness
¨C modeled after a Chinese dining table or an Asian food court, where people
with similar intentions come together to exchange ideas and to enjoy a wide
range of offers and possibilities. This open and loosely knitted network among
architects, academics, practitioners, and scholars is the best way to ensure the
sustainability and versatility of mAAN operation in the complexity and diversity
of Asian context.
In the 1st mAAN international conference in Macau in 2001, a Declaration was
proclaimed to set up the direction of mAAN discourse and mission into the
future. From Macau ¨C the Mediterranean of Asia ¨C mAAN 2nd conference in 2002
was pushed further South to Singapore ¨C the crossing point of continents and
oceans - which attempted to discuss a wide range of issues from theory,
inventory, practice, to networking. The 3rd conference was held in Surabaya
(Indonesia) in 2003 at the South-Eastern edge of Asia, after the historical
gathering of mAAN, UNESCO, and DoCoMoMo in Chandigarh in the same year. After
Surabaya, mAAN3.5 was organized a special gathering in Tokyo for consolidation,
before launching various initiatives and organizing the next conferences in
Shanghai (2004), and Istanbul (2005).
