Architecture and Identity
06 - 08 Aralık 2004, House of World Cultures - Berlin
|
Tarih: 06 - 08 Aralık 2004
Yer: House of World Cultures, Berlin
Context
“Is there something like a reflected indigenousness?”
This question could well be applied to the ongoing discourse about cultural
identity in architecture. It has been asked by the sociologists Ulrich Beck,
Anthony Giddens, and Scott Lash (1994) in developing the concept of
"reflexive modernization".
The conference scheduled for December 6 - 8 2004 will serve as a platform to
discuss the issue of identity in architecture in a wider framework. It will
bring architecture-specific issues in the context of a more general discourse on
modernization involving historians, sociologists and art historians. »Conference
Program
Concept
While the research project has a focus on five regional studies (in Brazil,
India, Mexico, the Middle East, and Singapore), the conference wants to compare
and discuss regional concepts of identity together and in a larger context. The
conference will complement the research project on architecture and identity by
inviting participants and contributions from beyond the regional studies.
The idea is to make the regional debates meet in Berlin.
Venue
The conference will take place in the House of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen
der Welt) that has been built by Hugh Stubbins in 1957 as a congress hall, the
contribution of the USA to the International Building Exhibition (IBA 1957).
With its elegantly swinging roof line and its free plan, the building has become
a symbol of the optimistic spirit of post-war Modernism. Since its inauguration,
the House of World Cultures has been hosting conferences and art festivals with
a particular interest in global cultural exchange. The building is one of
Berlin’s most noted sites and conveniently located close to the Reichstag
parliament building and the city center.

Exhibition
An accompanying exhibition is intended to give a visual impression of the
conference subject – to bring together the debate on ideas and its material
manifestation.
The conference presents the results of the research project (Monday) and
provides a platform for cross-regional exchange and inter-disciplinary
discussion (Tuesday and Wednesday). In addition, it offers lectures by
international researchers and practitioners with various professional
backgrounds.»online registration
