EUROPEAN PRIZE FOR URBAN PUBLIC

The European Prize for Urban Public Space 2004, announced together by the
Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), the Architekturzentrum
Wien (AzW), the Institut Français d’Architecture (IFA), the Nederlands
Architectuur Instituut (NAI) and The Architecture Foundation (AF) intends to
reflect the efforts made all over Europe in order to improve and recover the
public spaces in our cities.
This year’s edition has received a magnificent answer, with a total of 169
projects presented coming from 20 different European countries, being all of
them highly qualified.
The Jury, formed by representatives of the organizing institutions, met on
May 21 at the CCCB, and decided to grant the Prize, ex-aequo, to the
interventions Remodelación del Paseo del Óvalo, la Escalinata y su entorno, in
Teruel (Spain), by UTE David Chipperfield architects + b720 arquitectos, and
Restauració paisatgística del dipòsit controlat de la Vall d’en Joan in
Begues, Catalunya (Spain) by Enric Batlle, Joan Roig and Teresa Galí-Izard.
At the same time, and given the quality and quantity of the submitted
projects, the Jury decided to concede four special mentions:
Havnebadet in Kobenhavn, (Denmark) by PLOT/Julien De Smedt i Bjarke
Ingels;
Tenerife Verde in Buenavista del Norte, Tenerife, (Spain), by GPY
Arquitectos;
Tilla-Durieux-Park in Berlin, (Germany) by DS Landscape Architects;
Stortorget in Kalmar, (Sweden) by Caruso St. John Architect.
