PEEP SHOW 2004
The Jury:
Pierre Thibault, Architect. Quebec, QC
Other Jurors T.B.A.
Competition Brief
To create an innovative street presence for visual art during ARTCITY and
other special events in Calgary, the annual juried PEEP SHOW competition
will commission the design and construction (pending funding) of one
pavilion every two years. These temporary ARTCITY pavilions, scattered
throughout Calgary's downtown, create a dialogue between designer, artist,
and viewer, encouraging discourse into the fine arts and the urban
relationships that evolve around them.
ARTCITY began presenting exhibitions in the PEEP SHOW pavilions in the fall
of 2002. This year, the three previous winning entries will be constructed
and programmed as temporary art pavilions during ARTCITY 2004. The winning
entry from PEEP SHOW 2004 will be constructed for ARTCITY 2006.
Designers are encouraged to pursue a critical and innovative exploration of
the PEEP SHOW pavilion within its urban context. Designers may or may not
choose to explore one of the following topics to generate ideas for their
pavilion.
a) Innovative methods of exhibiting art. Traditional "gallery"
design
provides a space for one to view art in its various forms. The pavilion
provides immense opportunity to explore the relationship between viewer and
artist outside of the gallery. The city is the gallery. The viewer is no
longer the art patron but the everyday citizen.
b) Pavilion as urban furniture. Our streetscapes are composed of
various elements including benches, planters, storefronts, light standards,
plazas, +15 walkways, and the paved surface. How does the street adopt and
integrate the temporary pavilion for the interest of the pedestrian?
c) The ARTCITY 2004 theme of CURRENCY. What defines CURRENT
architectural thought? A myriad of influences inform and challenge
contemporary architectural design from ecological responsibility and
innovative form making, to the confines of economic viability (or
CURRENCY-driven projects). Similarly, how does architectural design respond
to a consumerist driven culture who understands value only in terms of
CURRENCY?
d) Absorption. How does the pedestrian absorb the intent of the
artist? Does the pavilion allow for a deeper understanding of the art piece
by its response to light, time, noise, etc? Is it a noticeable object or
something meant to be discovered? Ultimately, how does the pavilion
transcend the mere glance of the pedestrian and offer a moment of
introspection within the hectic pace of urban life?
Key Concepts
SITING
Pavilions will be constructed along Stephen Avenue Mall (8th Ave S.W.
between MacLeod Trail S.E. and 3rd St S.W.) in Calgary. Pavilions should use
the site to develop a prototype that could be constructed anywhere in
Calgary's downtown in future years rather than being site specific. The
selection of the site should strengthen the design intent while optimizing
its presence and use during ARTCITY 2006.
For information about Stephen Avenue Mall please see the following link:

Function
Pavilions must be designed to present visual art in a way that is beneficial
both for the viewer and the art. Art may be viewed either from inside or
outside the pavilion. Pavilions may be designed for a particular art form
(i.e. video, sculpture, performance, painting, etc.) or to exhibit a variety
of art forms. The method of displaying art should be clearly defined and
illustrated in your proposal.
Artists' Input
Teams should consult with or include as a team member at least one artist to
advise how the work could best be exhibited in the pavilion.
Exhibition of entries
All PEEP SHOW entries will be featured in a special exhibition during
ARTCITY 2004. Please note that your name or company name can only be
displayed on the back of your presentation boards.
Judging Criteria
a) Submissions will be evaluated on a construction cost estimate
illustrating that the pavilion can be constructed for $10,000 CDN or less.
b) The pavilion is portable, reusable, and no longer than a parking space -
8' x 17' (2.4 x 5.1m) and no more than 6' (2m) high when disassembled for
storage
c) It is evident how art will be exhibited in the pavilion.
d) The pavilion is suitable for future exhibitions, featuring a variety of
artists.
e) Public safety has to be considered.
f) The pavilion is durable and reasonably weather proof.
g) It is possible to secure the pavilion against theft and vandalism.
h) There is suitable lighting for the art so that it is visible in day and
night.
i) Ease of assembly and disassembly have been considered.
j) Cost of annual reassembly is considered.
k) At least one artist has been consulted regarding the appropriateness of
the design for exhibiting art.
l) The intended site has been defined (a specific or generic downtown site),
and the design concept is well suited to the site. The location is free to
the public.
Prizes
The winning team will receive $3000 CDN. The winning team is responsible for
the preparation of construction drawings for their proposal. The fee for the
preparation of construction drawings by or under the supervision of the
winning team is included in the award.
Please indicate how your team should be permanently identified on the
pavilion.
ARTCITY reserves the right to select none of the entries or more than one,
if the costs of those entries adds up to no more than $10,000 CDN.
