General Goal
The goal of the Swiss in Cheese contest is to stage a combination of some of the
playful/creative values inherent in the product Emmentaler Switzerland with
other such values typical of its land of origin, Switzerland. And then produce
an
exhibition and a catalogue-book of great prestige.
The Theme of the Contest
To represent in a creative manner (in any key: ironic, sarcastic, funny,
documentary, advertising, …) a Multimedia Mountain Tale including a number of
keywords, to do both with Emmentaler Switzerland and with “Switzerlandness”.
The tales can be expressed in four different media: short films, web
animations, photography and graphics/illustrations.
9X9 grid
9 keywords associated with Switzerland in people’s imagination (the
“Switzerlandness”) and 9 keywords linked to Emmentaler Switzerland make up a
grid with 81 possible combinations. As in a naval battle, by selecting two boxes
in the grid we can identify the start and end of a Multimedia
Mountain Tale. Thus, for example, from “Emme-Heidi” to
“Genuine-Edelweiss” we may develop a tale, where Emmentaler plays a more or
less explicit role. In the line containing the values associated with the
“Switzerlandness”, a box has been deliberately left blank, [?], for use by
anyone wishing to add an extra value needed in the development of his/her
creative tale. It is mandatory to specify a box - in the 9x9 grid -
corresponding to the start and a box corresponding to the end of the tale
submitted. An etymological curiosity: the word Emmentaler is made up of four
independent units, each playing a different role: Emme is the name of a valley
in the heart of Switzerland, where they make the famous holey cheese; N is a
euphonic consonant serving as a link; Tal means Valley and ER stands for Native
of the place. Thus, Emmentaler means Native of the Emme Valley.
The four creative sections of the Swiss in Cheese Contest
1 Short films
Videos lasting from 2'30" to 4'00", filmed with any technique and
masterised on a DVD.
2 Web animations
Sequential animations lasting up to 60”, or interactive animations; all
animations must be suitable for viewing with a web browser. Hence, they must be
masterised on a DVD or a CD-Rom.
3 Photography
Individual images, series of photos, or even micro picturestories... to a
maximum of 9 images. The works must be printed on photographic paper in A4
format size paper maximum (per picture).
4 Graphics / Illustrations
Individual images or series of images up to a maximum of 9 drawings per tale.
These works must be printed in a high resolution format on A4 size paper (per
work). The authors retain the intellectual property of the works submitted, but
the copies handed in will not be returned. The projects selected for the Swiss
in Cheese exhibition and for the catalogue-book can also be used in later years,
in similar events and activities, with no direct commercial purposes.
Prizes
The total value of the prizes is 20,000 Euro. Four first prizes, worth 4,000
Euro each (one per section) and four mentions, worth 1,000 Euro (one per
section). Subject to the total value of the prizes of 20,000 Euro, the jury
reserves the right to distribute the amounts in different ways.
The Jury
The names of the members of the jury will be published on the website http://www.swissincheese.it

The Exhibit-Event
A rich, representative selection of the projects submitted will be displayed
during a Show-Event at a prestigious venue in Milan (an art gallery, a cultural
centre, a public place where events are held…) within a setting with a high
emotional impact. Space will be subdivided to display the best projects from the
4 separate sections, in a pleasurable atmosphere, not without a touch of irony,
dedicated to Emmentaler Switzerland and “Switzerlandness”.
The Prize Awarding Ceremony
On 17 November 2004, during the inauguration of the Show, in the presence of
journalists and opinion leaders, the winners of the SWISS IN CHEESE + contest
will be proclaimed, and the relative prizes will be awarded.
The Catalogue - Book
The communication and visibility circuit of the Swiss in Cheese contest
projects selected by the jury will be documented in a (limited edition) book
with a high representative capacity.
