Cultural diversification is likely to become an issue in the 21st century,
exceeding the globalization of culture and civilization notable of the 20th
century. Originally, culture was something nurtured through the climate, natural
features and society of each land. Even within the wave of globalization, each
land had inveterately breathed its own respective culture. By shedding light on
the value of that inherent culture in the 21st century and by activating the
diversification of value, it is possible that a whole concept of the culture of
a more affluent human society can be explored. The difference is value.
As one attempt to face this new era, let us consider the AsiaFront Village.
In all parts of Asia throughout the ages, while each possessed a unique
culture, there was also an exchange of culture through routes such as the Silk
Road. However, this did not serve to integrate culture, but as a factor of
cultural exchange it encouraged people to cultivate that which was valuable to
them and to nurture the original culture of their own land. If not serving to
unite, it was not isolating either. Due to the globalization of information,
communication, and transport of the present age, is it possible to renew
appreciation of the difference in such cultures, and to use it as nourishment
for a new age? Meaning exists in an AsiaFront that situates the obscured
diversified culture on the cutting edge of the concept of the culture in the
21st century.
The AsiaFront Village ought to be a place of further promotion of the unique
culture interspersed throughout Asia and the enjoyment of its results. It can be
located anywhere in the world. It can be located in the city or the suburbs. It
can be consolidated into one facility, or it can be an international conference
facility or training center, a lodging facility or complex facility.
One important issue is the recognition of the value of difference as the
fundamental spirit. Through the architect?s imagination, rather than abstract
discussion, concrete forms are sought in the proposals for the AsiaFront Village
as an institution to survey the culture of the 21st century. It is anticipated
that proposals, including program design, will be full of originality.
