Introduction:
"While ensuring the free flow of ideas by word and image, care should
be
exercised that all cultures can express themselves and make themselves
known. Freedom of expression, media pluralism, multilingualism, equal
access to art and to scientific and technological knowledge, including
in digital form, and the possibility for all cultures to have access to
the means of expression and dissemination are the guarantees of cultural
diversity." (UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, Article
6 - Towards access for all to cultural diversity, 2 November 2001)
How can digital technology enrich the presence of intangible heritage?
Not only in safeguarding and sustaining it, but in reinterpreting it and
thus making it relevant for our times? Can it help reflect our living
cultural heritage of rituals, performing arts, languages, etc. in all
its rich cultural diversity and pluralism? Can it foster true
intercultural dialogue among people from different cultures? How would
the younger generation react, interact, or even create new forms to
express their intangible heritage?
These are the fundamental questions we are asking you to address through
the "Nabi Digital Storytelling Competition of Intangible Heritage".
Objetives:
The objective of this competition is to promote creative interpretations
of intangible heritage through the use of interactive multimedia tools
and digital storytelling technologies, in result giving new life and new
forms of visibility to living communities.
Not only would such virtual artistic expressions demonstrate innovative
ways of expressing intangible heritage, they would also bring about
interactive platforms for a better mutual understanding of each other's
heritage.
Within this context, the competition especially seeks to encourage young
practitioners in various fields of creativity related to digital
technology, to reflect on the theme of intangible heritage and to send
project proposals for a multimedia production, including online
websites.
The competition is organized in line with ICOM 2004 / 21st General
Assembly (2-8 October 2004, Seoul, Republic of Korea), coordinated by
Art Center Nabi with the support of ICOM, AVICOM, the Korean National
Commission for UNESCO (KNCU), and UNESCO, especially within the
framework of the UNESCO DigiArts Portal.
Art Center Nabi:
Art Center Nabi was founded in December 2000 as a non-profit centre for
new media art in Seoul, Korea. It aims to nurture creativity through
intercommunication between various fields of research and experiments,
such as humanities, social sciences, pure and applied sciences,
technology and art.
Nabi is engaged in research, education, production and exhibition of new
work, with special emphasis on the quality of communication.
Human-centred and sensitive to cultural differences, Nabi seeks a higher
level of communication that existing market mechanisms cannot offer
Consept:
1) Definition of Intangible Heritage
Intangible cultural heritage, as defined in the Convention that was adopted
by the 32nd Session of the General Conference of UNESCO, means in the first
place the practices, representations and expressions, as well as the associated
knowledge and necessary skills, that communities, groups and, in some cases,
individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. In fact, this
definition of 'intangible heritage' is an evolution and significant widening of
the term 'cultural heritage', corresponding to the true cultural modes of today
and yesterday. Once referring exclusively to the physical remains of cultures,
such as monuments, heritage has come to include this new category of intangible
heritage: it reflects living culture, focusing on the informational and
communicational, spiritual and philosophical systems on which creations are
based.
For more detailed information, please visit UNESCO's website devoted to
intangible heritage. Other resources to be consulted would be the list of
proclaimed masterpieces of intangible heritage 2001 and 2003 at http://www.unesco.org/culture/intangible-heritage/masterpiece.php?lg=EN
2) The themes of the storytelling project proposals should be within the two
major frameworks of:
A. Artistic/Creative
i) Recreating intangible heritage using multimedia tools, in forms of websites
or CD Roms.
ii) Creative interpretation of living culture as intangible heritage and the
presentation of it in digital formats.
B. Educational/Community Oriented
i) Sharing and exchanging knowledge on Intangible Heritage by establishing
collaborative platforms, online networks and digital communities.
