The IOC/IAKS AWARD is the only
international architecture prize for sports and leisure facilities already in
operation. Invitation to compete 2005.
Every two years since 1987, the
IOC/IAKS AWARD has been commending sports facilities of exemplary design and
function. The winning projects can be new buildings or existing facilities that
have been extended or modernized.
The competition is sponsored by the
International Olympic Committee (IOC), Lausanne, and the International
Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS), Cologne.
Together with the International
Paralympic Committee (IPC) in Bonn, the IAKS is also awarding the IPC
Distinction for sports facilities suitable for the disabled. The IPC Distinction
aims to promote accessibility to sports facilities and all other buildings in
order to give people with disabilities the opportunity to practise or view sport
without limitation or barriers.
Eligible to compete are
clients/operators (operators) and architects/engineers (designers). The entry
must be submitted jointly by operators and designers.
The facilities (new, extended or
modernized) must have been in successful operation for at least two years.
According to their use and location, they are assigned to different facility
categories and assessed according to certain selection criteria.
The projects selected by the Jury are
commended with the IOC/IAKS AWARD for Exemplary Sports and Leisure Facilities.
The prizes are conferred in Gold, Silver and Bronze. In addition, the Jury can
also award Special Distinctions for facilities with interesting aspects.
The results of the IOC/IAKS AWARD
will be presented at the International IAKS Congress in conjunction with the
International Trade Fair for Amenity Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities (FSB) in
Cologne.
This includes:
Presentation of the IOC/IAKS AWARD during the opening ceremony of the IAKS
Congress.
Exhibition of the winning entries at
the international trade fair FSB.
Publication of details of all
prize-winning entries in an extensive off-print (details of previous IOC/IAKS
AWARDs)
Objective
The importance of sport and sports-oriented leisure facilities for human
pleasure, health and education is undisputed. Sports facilities and the
standards of quality they embody are essential for the
practice of sport. It was this realization that prompted the introduction of
this competition first held in 1987. And today it is as valid as ever.
The IOC/IAKS AWARD is the only international architecture competition for sports
and leisure facilities.
Its aim is to bring to public
attention exemplary buildings and complexes in which good functionality
harmonizes well with high-quality architectural design inside and outside, with
environmental compatibility and with considerate integration into the urban or
rural landscape.
The IOC/IAKS AWARD subscribes to the
principle of "Sport for All" with which the Olympic Movement promotes the right
of all people to practise sport independently of their race, age, gender, social
status and economic situation. At the same time, the IOC/IAKS AWARD supports the
goals of the Olympic Movement's Agenda 21.
The IPC DISTINCTION for Accessibility
is aimed at increasing the accessibility of all sports facilities and
architectural projects and giving opportunities to persons with a disability to
practise and view sport freely and without barriers.
