The American Institute of Architects Hampton Roads, Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads and the Town of Smithfield, Virginia are jointly sponsoring an innovation based design competition for affordable, sustainable workforce housing.

Ideally this initiative will provide ideas and solutions for broader national application, while specifically providing solutions for low income replacement housing in Smithfield. On a site in Smithfield, Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads and the Town of Smithfield intend to replace substandard housing in the Pinewood neighborhood currently slated for demolition. The competition program below provides for replacement of three duplex structures and the addition of six new single family homes.

Program
Three duplexes with 1100 SF units and six 1200 SF single family homes employing the subdivision plan provided. Yard and common areas at the discretion of the designer. Design Guidelines All entries shall respond to and incorporate Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads and Smithfield Historic Guidelines.
