The UCD Gateway Project Architectural Competition is a two-stage competition process to select the architectural consultants for an exceptional quality architectural concept and masterplan for the Gateway area. The Expressions of Interest stage will first produce a longlist of no more than ten candidates. Following an interview phase, three to five applicants will be invited to participate in Stage 2: Design to submit a detailed design proposal in response to the Conditions of Competition and Design Guidelines that will be issued by UCD in due course. The winning design will be announced in the second quarter of 2007.

Eligibility
In order to be eligible, firms shall demonstrate that they have extensive experience in the design of institutional/commercial buildings of or in excess of 20,000 gross square metres. They must also demonstrate experience with the design of large civic spaces and associated landscape and open space design. Firms must have successfully completed prime consulting contracts for major capital works in excess of 50.000.000 Euro.

This invitation is open to all architectural firms, joint ventures, or consortia of architects, as eligible under EU Directive 2005 / 36 / EC or comparable registration recognised by a national government.

The Site
The site is located on the north-eastern side of UCD Belfield campus along the N11 main road, approximately 4 kilometres from Dublin city centre. The site comprises the main approach and entry to the campus from the N11, a national primary route in Ireland running from Dublin city centre to County Wexford. The competition site is comprised of 9.86 hectares over eight parcels (parcels A – E, H, J and K). Parcels A – E will accommodate new university-related mixed uses including new student residential accommodations, retail outlets, a medical centre, crèche facility, an art house cinema, a hotel and aparthotel, office / enterprise space and other university uses. Parcels H, J and K will receive improved landscaping and pedestrian pathways.

The entire site will further accommodate an outdoor university mall, Gateway Plaza, new pedestrian bridge over the N11, bus terminus, multi - storey car park and additional infrastructure.

General Description
The site is bounded to the north - west by the Veterinary College, to the west by the O’Reilly Hall, Science Centre and Belfield Lake, to the south by the main body of the campus, pedestrian spine and Tierney Building and to the east by the UCD Engineering and Materials Science Centre, the Deadalus Building and Clinton Institute.

UCD is located within Dún Laoghaire - Rathdown, an administrative county located to the south east of the city of Dublin. The area boasts several key employers in the Dublin area, including Ericsson and Radio Telefís Éireann (RTE), Ireland's Public Service Broadcaster. The Wicklow Mountain Range rings the southern horizon of the campus, a popular recreation destination.

The Belfield campus is currently well-served by bus transport, particularly along the N11. A new Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) is proposed to link the campus to the Dundrum Luas (light rail transit) station and Blackrock DART (suburban electric railway) station, providing a direct link between these public transport services currently located more than 1 kilometre from campus.
