Independent Projects is the Program's individual artist category. Applications are submitted through a sponsoring organization and are exempt from the Council's four-request limit. Independent projects originate with the individual, not a sponsoring nonprofit. The Independent Projects category supports innovative projects by professionals (or teams of professionals) in the design and planning fields that advance the fields and contribute to the public's understanding of the built environment. Previously funded projects have included the development of design prototypes, historical studies of building types, critical and theoretical analyses, explorations of new technology for the design fields, and product development.

Individuals whose work is not widely known are encouraged to apply. Individuals may consult with Program staff for help finding a sponsor.

Funds awarded for Independent Projects are not fellowships. All funded projects are awarded the full amount requested up to 10.000 Dollars. Sponsoring organizations are eligible to receive an administrative fee of 750 Dollars.

Eligibility Criteria
- Only design professionals who are New York State residents are eligible.
- Individuals may be associated with only one project request per year.
- Student projects are not eligible.
- NYSCA funds cannot be used for out-of-state travel expenses.

Additional Evaluative Criteria
Project's potential to make a significant impact on the work of the individual and / or the field.

Project's potential to make a contribution to increased public awareness and appreciation of the built environment.

Budget Note: Project budgets should include only the designer's fee and other project-related expenses (up to 10.000 Dollars), and the administrative fee of 750 Dollars per project.
