Yarışma BilgileriThe Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), Arizona, is organizing a design competition and public exhibition, Flip a Strip. This innovative project hopes to foster creative, yet pragmatic new visions for the renovation of the small-scale strip shopping plazas that line the streets of this metropolitan area -and virtually every suburban zone in the country.

The competition is a hybrid, both open and invitational, with a nominal registration fee of 60 Dollars.

Participants must be professional architects with at least five years professional experience. Teams of architects and developers may submit.

Participants can select one of three model sites (which have been submitted by city planners from the municipalities of Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix, Arizona) for their design proposal.

Ineligibility / Conflicts of Interest
Ineligible to participate in this competition are: employees and board members of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and the Scottsdale Cultural Council (and its affiliate organizations) and their immediate family; members of the project advisory committee; members of the technical and design juries and their immediate family and/or architectural firms; sponsors and sponsoring corporations; staff members of the planning departments at the cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe and their immediate family.

Staff members of a sponsoring corporation may independently submit to the competition as individual participants in teams that include others not employed by the sponsoring corporation / firm.

Submission
Requirements

Entrants are required to submit two 30” x 40” presentation boards that clearly document their team’s proposal, and a brief technical statement outlining the nuts-and-bolts of their scheme. The exact requirements for each component of the submission are listed in the full competition brief, provided to registered teams.

Questions and Answers
Registered entrants may seek clarification or submit questions to the competition advisor via e-mail over the course of the competition. All answers will be posted in a fair and equitable way.

Due Date
The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art must receive all submissions by 17:00 MST on 31 March 2008.

Selection Criteria
Design Jury

Submissions will undergo an initial, technical review followed by a design jury. The purpose of the Design Jury is to assess the design quality of each submission and choose the strongest design ideas. The Design Jury will select the prizewinners and any identify any projects they deem worthy of an honorable mention.

- Grady Gammage, Jr., partner, Gammage & Burnham, Phoenix, AZ

Selection Criteria
The design jury will review the work based on the:
- Originality of the proposal’s design vision
- Responsiveness of the proposal to the competition’s objectives
- Responsiveness of the proposal to the site and the context of the Strip
- Quality and clarity of presentation materials

The jury may also award an unspecified number of Honorable Mentions, as they see fit. Honorable Mentions will not carry a cash prize.
