Yarışma BilgileriThis open international design competition invites architect-led multi-disciplinary design teams to design an exciting new cycle and bridleway bridge over the River Douglas. The competition is being managed and administered by the RIBA Competitions Office on behalf of REMADE; Lancashire County Council and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

REMADE which stands for Reclamation and MAnagement of DErelict land, has been set up by Lancashire County Council in partnership with the Northwest Regional Development Agency as part of the Agency’s commitment to tackling the region’s derelict land problem.

One project being considered by REMADE is a new greenway, between Southport and Preston, which will require a new crossing of the River Douglas in Becconsall. On the line of a disused railway, the bridge would replace an 85 m long structure, demolished in the 1960’s.

REMADE are looking for a fine structure of its time in harmony with the surrounding landscape and one which legibly marks the crossing point.

Site and Context
REMADE are currently leading on the crossing on behalf of the Ribble Coast and Wetlands Regional Park Partnership. The Ribble Coast and Wetlands area is one of the most important places for wildlife in Europe. The Partnership is working together to deliver a vision, that by 2020 the proposed Regional Park will be an internationally recognised destination based on its environmental significance.

A new crossing of the River Douglas will improve access within the proposed Regional Park allowing more visitors to enjoy the area. It is anticipated that the new river crossing will function not only as an access route but also as a flagship attraction within the Regional Park.

Eligibility
The competition is open to registered architect-led, multi-disciplinary design teams.

Registration
The registration fee is 35 Pounds (including VAT) and this can either be paid by cheque to RIBA Competitions or via credit card over the telephone. Once registered you will be provided with details of how to access the competition website and issued with an official declaration form.

Budget
The budget for the scheme has not yet been fixed and will be determined to suit the competition winner. Initial construction costs and likely maintenance costs will be considered in conjunction with the flair and scale of the design and the quality of the materials and detailing. As a guide, a budget of 2-3 million Poundds should be considered.

Competition Structure
The competition will be in two stages and judged anonymously in the first stage. The authors of up to six schemes will be invited to develop their designs and present them to the jury panel at interview.

Stage one designs should be submitted on 1 A1 panel accompanied by a short report on not more than two A4 sheets.

Assessment Criteria
The Jury Panel will make their selection at first stage on the basis of the following criteria:
- Design flair: REMADE are looking for a fine structure of its time in harmony with the surrounding landscape and one that legibly marks the crossing point
 - Adherence to the brief: the design should meet all the physical requirements / constraints detailed in the brief
- Buildability

The criteria of the second stage will focus on:
- A more detailed response to issues outlined in the brief
- Whole life cost / quality
- The ability to work in partnership with the client team
- Evidence of ability to meet the client’s budget and programme
- Demonstrable track record of delivery
