The Lighting Design Awards are organised by Lighting magazine and the Institution of Lighting Engineers with support from the Lighting Industry Federation.

Eligibility
Everyone actively involved in lighting design. Architects, manufacturers, engineers and dedicated lighting designers are recognised in the awards.

Categories
There are fifteen categories in total; twelve covering lighting schemes and three for innovations in lighting equipment. Previous scheme winners have included restaurants, theatres, marinas, churches and supermarkets while previous innovation winners have included streetlights, spotlights, lamps and ballasts. This year sees the launch of the Restaurants and Hotels category, introduced to reflect the growth in the quality and quantity of projects in the hospitality industry. Categories, entry details and the rules and regulations can be found by following the Categories link. Entrants can enter more than one category. However, please note that specific factors are considered in each individual category. Judges will be looking for information that meets these specific requirements, hence entries should be written accordingly.

Judging Process
The judges are all independent lighting experts and academics drawn from across the industry. They include experienced lighting designers, architects, consultants and engineers. Ray Molony, editor of Lighting magazine, will chair the judging.

In the first instance, entries are judged on a technical, conceptual and aesthetic assessment based on your submission. Where appropriate, entries selected for the shortlist will then be visited in situ by independent industry experts for final assessment. Following reports back to the full judging team, an overall winner in each category will be chosen. The judging co-ordinator will give notice to all short-listed schemes before any site visit is arranged.

The Lighting Design Awards has a history of strong competition. In previous years, we have received over 180 entries. Therefore first impressions really do count, especially on the 500-word written brief. It might be beneficial to break this down into specific headings. Entrants must address the criteria of the awards where relevant: extent of ingenuity and originality applied; aesthetic effectiveness; energy efficiency and energy management; effectiveness as to engineering and performance; level of user satisfaction; contribution to public safety and minimisation of obtrusive light, where appropriate; compliance with the scheme rules; compliance with relevant British and European standards and regulations (both statutory and advisory), and professional codes of practice. These criteria define lighting design for the purpose of the awards.

Details of the finalists' initiatives may be included in publicity material used to promote the Lighting Design Awards, in collateral received by those attending the awards and in issues of Lighting (or related industry publications). If you have any further questions about the Lighting Design Awards, please e-mail [email protected].

The awards will be presented at a gala evening event in the Grand Ballroom of the London Hilton, Park Lane on 12 March 2009.

Entry Deadline: 06 October 2008
