Glyndwr University has identified the need for new student residences to accommodate 500 students as part of a broader strategy to accommodate undergraduates and graduates on campus and increase the provision for student services including catering. The purpose of this project is to prepare initial design proposals for the first phase of development being 500 study bedrooms and a subsequent phase of student facilities within the Plas Coch Campus. This briefing document outlines the parameters for the development of that site.

Eligibility
The competition is open internationally to architect-led multi-disciplinary design teams. It should be noted that the competition promoters will be looking to select a team with the capacity and resources to deliver the project and competitors should bear this in mind from the outset when applying for this competition.

Timescale, Budget and Procurement
The University wishes to complete one phase of the accommodation development for occupation ready for the start of the January 2010 semester. The total value of the project is estimated to be in the region of 15 - 20 million Pounds inclusive of fees and VAT (where applicable). It is anticipated that the project will be procured under a Design and Build contract with the Architect being novated. The University has appointed a Client Representative at this stage to aid in the progress of the project.

Each of the unsuccessful teams taking part in the second stage will be paid an equal honorarium of 6.000 Pounds including VAT. The successful applicant’s honorarium represents an advance payment on fees for the full commission.

Site Visit
Organised site visits will be held and anyone interested in attending should send an email to [email protected]. Dates for the visits are yet to be fixed and the number of available visits will depend upon the number of requests received.

Competition Format
The competition will be run in two stages, as follows :
Stage 1: Seeks submission of concept designs which will be assessed anonymously. A shortlist of up to three will be identified and invited to proceed to stage two.

Stage 2: Will involve an interview with shortlisted designers. The purpose of the interview will be to meet the team, to learn more about the thinking behind and the viability of the stage one concept, and the ability of the team to deliver and take the project forward.

Shortlisted designers will also be required to provide a written submission, details of which are provided within the Competition Conditions.

08 September 2008:
Competition Launch
24 September 2008: Deadline for practices to submit questions (in writing) relating to the briefing.
01 October 2008: Responses to questions raised issued to the competitors
31 October 2008, 14:00: Deadline for Submission of Designs
05 - 12 November 2008: Assessment of designs and identification of shortlist by Jury Panel with the assistance of their advisers.
13 November 2008: Shotlist notified.
21 November 2008: Submission of supporting document
28 November 2008: Team presentations and final judging
December 08: Notification to Shortlist of winning design
