Structural Awards 08-09
The Corus Student Awards Bridges & Structures aim to give structural engineering students an opportunity to display their engineering design skills in the use of structural steelwork in an innovative and effective way.

The Corus Student Awards Structural Steel Design has been organised by The Steel Construction Institute, with the sponsorship of Corus, and is one of two popular Undergraduate Prize Award Competitions. The other competition covers steel bridge design. The objective of this competition is to encourage engineering design skills in the use of structural steelwork in an innovative structural solution. The brief has been formulated to encourage the entrants to realise the full structural, economic and aesthetic advantages offered by the use of both open and tubular structural steelwork profiles.

A winter sports centre is being developed, by providing an indoor ski slope, an ice rink and a climbing wall, all as part of the same facility. The client has been impressed with the iconic nature of recent construction in the UK, and has a vision that an icon representing the structure will even appear on directional road signs. The client wishes an immediately identifiable image for the new structure in the same way as that for other national landmark structures. An outline design is required for the proposed structure.

Eligibility
Individual entries, or team entries from a small group of students, will be accepted. Although the competition is aimed at final year students, entries from students at any other appropriate stages will also be considered at the
discretion of the course tutors.

How to Enter
- To enter the competition the academic tutor(s) at your university should firstly complete the enclosed Notice of Intent form and return it to the competition organiser at the address given below by Friday 16 January 2009. This will enable the SCI to provide supplementary information should this be necessary.

- Any questions that competitors wish to ask should be submitted via the Undergraduate Prize Awards discussions area of the SCI’s web site. All competitors should review the questions and responses posted to the site; automatic notification can be set up via the user profile.

- The completed Entry Form and Authorship Declaration (contained in this booklet) should reach the competition organiser at the address given below by Friday 08 May 2009. On receipt of this, the SCI will issue each competitor with an entry reference number, which should be marked clearly on all items forming the design entry and on the outside of the package in which the entry is submitted. No other form of identification or distinguishing mark should appear on any part of the submission.

Submissions in The University
All students intending to submit an entry for this competition should inform the academic tutor in charge of the project at their university, who should submit a Notice of Intent form (page 16) by Friday 16 January 2009. Completed submissions should be handed to the tutor in sufficient time to allow for the selection of the best entry from the university.

The chosen submission from each university must be received at the SCI by 16:00 on Friday 05 June 2009. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Awards
University Level
A certificate will be issued to all those reaching the national final.

National Level
The winners of the competition will receive certificates and prizes up to a total of 5.000 Pounds. The exact division of the prize money will be decided by the Judges and will depend upon the standard of the submissions received. Generally, the judging panel will seek to award up to three prizes. The winners’ universities will also receive certificates.

Steel Bridge Design 08-09
The Corus Student Awards Bridges & Structures aim to give structural engineering students an opportunity to display their engineering design skills in the use of structural steelwork in an innovative and effective way.

The Corus Students Awards Structural Bridge Design has been organised by The Steel Construction Institute, and is one of a pair of undergraduate prize award competitions; the other competition covers the design of building structures. The objective of the Competition is to encourage excellence in steel bridge design.

A major dual carriageway intersects with a three–lane motorway at a gradeseparated junction. Currently, traffic may leave or join the motorway via a large traffic island above the motorway. Traffic on the dual carriageway that does not join the motorway, but continues on the dual carriageway must also traverse the traffic island, which adds to the congestion. It is proposed to provide a bridge over the island and motorway, to allow traffic on the dual carriageway to continue directly. The current congestion is at least partly due to the burgeoning commerce in the area - and for this reason the client requires a landmark structure in keeping with the local economic prosperity.

The competition will operate at two levels. All submissions made at each university will first be judged locally by the academic tutor(s) involved with the project at that university. The winning submission at each university will then be entered for the national competition. A certificate will be issued to all those reaching the national final. Only one entry from each university will be considered to go forward for final judging at national level.

Eligibility
The competition is open only to undergraduates. Individual entries, or team entries from a small group of students, will be accepted. Although the competition is aimed at final year students, entries from any other appropriate stages will also be considered at the discretion of the course tutors.

The Twenty-first Corus Student Awards - Architecture is supported by the Steel Construction Institute (SCI), the British Constructional Steelwork Association Limited (BCSA) and The Architect’s Journal. RIBA Education supports the competition.

The Twenty-first Corus Student Awards - Architecture is supported by the Steel Construction Institute (SCI), the British Constructional Steelwork Association Limited (BCSA) and The Architect’s Journal. RIBA Education supports the competition.

The main purpose of this competition is to give architectural students a creative vehicle for learning about the use of steel in buildings. By taking part you will have the chance to explore the complex issues surrounding the theme of designing mixed-use schemes to meet the needs of the community in an urban environment, and providing this mix in a single building or structure.

The competition is, as usual, open to students of architecture in Europe. For both UK and overseas students the competition brief is to address the theme of Community One - the vertical community.

Steel has been one of the most important materials used in construction for the last 100 years or so. It has created a new architecture through its qualities of flexibility and strength. In your submission you are invited to explore the use of steel to address different functional requirements, including on a domestic scale - a difficult balancing act between scale, weight and utility. Designing in steel on a smaller scheme demands a light touch.

Eligibility for UK Entrants
The competition is open to students at all British Schools of Architecture recognised by the RIBA, who, at the time of application, are participating in courses leading to Part I and Part II examinations and also, to students who are doing courses at recognised British Schools of Architecture equivalent to Part I and II and are design orientated. In exceptional cases other students who are not doing an architectural course if their entry is up to the expected standard and is accepted by all the competition judges can enter the competition.

Team entries will be accepted provided that team members satisfy the requirements of the competition.

Eligibility for Overseas Entrants
The competition is open to all students registered in a school of architecture in Europe that is recognised by the professional body of that country. Both undergraduate (equivalent to RIBA Part I) and postgraduate (equivalent to RIBA PART II) entries are eligible to enter.

How to Enter
To enter the competition you should complete the entry form and authorship declaration and send it to Ken Oliver at the address shown on the form by 27 February 2009. On receipt of your entry form you will be issued with an entry reference number. This reference number should be clearly marked on all items forming your design entry and on the outside of the package in which your entry is submitted. No other form of identification or distinguishing marks should appear on any part of your submission.
