2nd INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON "STUDIES IN ANCIENT STRUCTURES"
9-13 Temmuz 2001

INTRODUCTION
Following the success of the International Congress on “Studies in Ancient Structures” held in Istanbul in 1997, with the enthusiasm of the participants for a second meeting, SAS2001 will be organised in Istanbul again. Istanbul the only city in the world built on two continents is one of the most suitable places to communicate the rapid advances made in theoretical and applied aspects of studies in preservation of the historical heritage.

Ancient structures refer to the old buildings belonging to the historical period from the earliest known civilizations. According to their function, these can be classified as buildings consecrated to worship, public buildings, buildings of water supplies, bridges and
fortifications.

This congress is aimed to provide an international and multi-disciplinary meeting for researchers and practitioners to present and discuss the past, present and future of historical buildings and their environments. It will bring together architects, engineers, scientists, building surveyors, urban planners, archaeologists, historians, and other specialists to exchange their analytical, experimental, historical and constructional experiences and studies in preservation of the historical heritage.
