The Vienna Architecture Congress is a yearly event and a unique form of presentation for discussing international contemporary architectural movements. It is a reunion of experts, scientifiques, artists and authors in order to define the direct or indirect influence on Architecture and Urbanism by cultural and social changes. The congress is organised in that way that visitors and participants will be offered an off-programme where they get the opportunity toexchange their opinions and to deepen different topics in various unformal talks or discussions. The 10th Vienna Architecture Congress provides an overview of occurrences in the field of architecture in the countries of East and South-East Europe over the past 13 years, covering a spectrum ranging from the architecture discourse to the new research post-communist cities. What rules does urban development adhere to in the post-communist or post-socialist countries, what is the relationship between the inner cities and the suburbs, where and under what conditions are the new centres arising, what is the meaning of urban tourism, what is the role being played by the process of gentrification, and what are the effects of increasing globalisation on urban lifestyles and the design of urban space? ‘Next Europe. Das Nächste Europa’ is to be a focus of discussions at the Architekturzentrum Wien in the following years. This programme is being launched with the 10th Vienna Architecture Congress, which is intended to provide the basis for an extended discussion of architecture, urban planning, socio-political and socio-cultural currents and changes in the East and South-East European nations on their path from Socialism and Communism to Capitalism.
