"Call for Papers" announced for international conference "Constructing Beijing 2008" to be held in Beijing this Autumn

Conference held in conjunction with two brand new exhibitions – ARENA and IPP, 13-16 November at the Beijing Exhibition Centre A high-level international conference in Beijing in November 2002 will bring together architects and engineers from around the world to discuss Beijing's development in the run up to the 2008 Olympic Games. Messe Frankfurt, together with co-organisers CONSULTEC and the China Parking Equipment Manufacturer's Association, will host the conference under the title "Constructing Beijing 2008" in conjunction with two brand new exhibitions, ARENA and IPP.

The Beijing government has allocated a staggering sum of money - over US$102 billion - for construction projects over the next five years, and much of this will be spent on sports venues, public design projects and transportation infrastructure. There is no doubt that, particularly in the field of design, engineering, planning and management, the Chinese need support from the international construction industry for such a huge venture.

Constructing Beijing 2008 will foster in-depth discussion about critical architectural, design and construction issues facing Beijing in the run-up to the 2008 Olympic Games: the biggest event ever to be staged in China. It will provide a forum where Chinese and international architects, engineers, developers, construction professionals and public authorities can meet and swap ideas on topics such as:
Designing world class Olympic competition venues and related buildings: fast track design and construction, overlay work (integration and refurbishment of existing venues), use of sustainable materials including recycled materials in stadium construction, use of sustainable energy, application of modern technology and digital equipment Public design impact on the city of Beijing: design of new public spaces around Olympic venues, refurbishment of existing spaces, environmental impact on the city of Beijing, landscape design
Integration of large infrastructure projects with the Olympic sites: Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS), integrated signage systems, integration of public transport stations, crowd modelling and control Stadium and event management: maintenance of stadiums, electronic access systems, safety management, event management software.

Papers for the conference are invited from 1 June 2002. Interested speakers should submit a 500 word abstract of their presentation, an introduction to their company and its expertise in the field, plus a biography of the speaker in English on or before 31 July 2002. Selection of speakers will take place in August 2002 by international committee of experts in the field of architecture and public design.

These two fairs have been launched to coincide with the massive infrastructure and construction investment that will be made in Beijing in the run up to the 2008 Olympic Games. ARENA and IPP together will provide a platform for manufacturers and construction professionals from around the world to display/exhibit their products or services at this critical time in Beijing's development. They take place from 13-16 November 2002 at the Beijing Exhibition Centre.
