An engineer who left Iraq in 1982, Mr. Dhia is a former leader of the US-based Iraqi Forum for Democracy. Before returning to Iraq earlier this year he helped in the selection of other Iraqi members of the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance team tasked with rebuilding Iraq’s shattered infrastructure.

Mr. Mouayad Hassan, is the Chairman of Iraqi Business Council, and a leading businessman and industrialist in Dubai. A graduate of a London College Mr. Hassan started his career in aviation sector in Iraq and then pursued as an investor in Dubai pioneering a lighting luminaire manufacturing factory named Lite tech industries. As the Managing Director Mr. Hassan groomed Lite tech from a single entrepreneurship to the status of a multinational company clinching a joint venture with Philips.

Dr. Mohammed Makiya
Renowned Iraqi Architect

Dr Mohammed Makiya was born in Baghdad in 1914. After studying in Iraq, he completed his architectural studies at the Liverpool School of Architecture before going on to do his Doctorate at Cambridge University in the UK. His list of professional affiliations is endless, Honorary corresponding Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)Member of the Architects Registration Board, UK and Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, UK to name but a few.

In 1959 Dr Makiya founded the first Department of Architecture in Iraq as part of the College of Engineering, Baghdad University. He was the active Head of Department until 1968, responsible for establishing Architectural studies that emphasised the local culture and environmental heritage. Dr Makiya was a member of the steering committee for the Aga Khan Awards in Architecture and has published many outstanding articles discussing Architecture and culture.

His private architectural and planning consultancy practice, first established in Baghdad in 1946 now has offices in Bahrain, Muscat, London, Kuwait, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Over the last forty years, D Makiya’s projects have been awarded numerous accolades of the highest importance.

Mohamed Alassam is a founder and managing director of DEWAN Architects and Engineers, a practice established in the UAE since 1984. Dewan is currently one of the leading architectural firms in the UAE and has contributed to the growth and development of the UAE landscape. Mohammed has recently visited his home Iraq after a 28 year absence and has re-established the Dewan office in Baghdad to help in the reconstruction process. Mohamed is also an active member of the executive committee for the newly founded Iraqi Business Council (IBC) whose mission is to develop investment opportunities and liaise between entrepreneurs and businesses in the UAE and Iraq.

12:15 Iraq's Cultural Heritage: Loss And Destruction-The Case For Restoration And Reconstruction
The presentation will start by giving an overall view of Iraq's rich cultural heritage, with emphasis on its archaeological and architectural sites and monuments. This will be followed by examining the dangers and causes of destruction and loss sustained by this heritage during the last century and also, especially, the destruction caused during the last war. A series of proposals will be argued to show how the present situation offers a great potential for restoring and reconstructing damaged or lost monuments. The presentation will be illustrated by numerous slides showing specific examples.

Architect & Scholar

Professor Ihsan Fethi, an Iraqi architect, planner and conservationist, is now Dean of the College of Arts, Amman University, Jordan. He was also Chairman of the School of Architecture, Baghdad University, and Dean of the School of Design and Engineering, Al Bayan University, Abu Dhabi, UAE. He is a well-known architectural educationist and critic. He has published numerous books and papers on traditional and contemporary architecture in Iraq and the Arab World.

He holds an LL.B. degree from the University of Baghdad, Post Graduate Diploma in Law from King’s College University, London and Doctor of Law from Ain-Shams University, Cairo. Dr. Adil joined the Iraqi Bar in 1961 and practised with Iraq Petroleum Company in Baghdad until 1972. Subsequently, he was Legal Director for International Agreements and Contracts with the Ministry of Oil, Legal Advisor to Iraq National Oil Company and the External Development Fund.
