"Design and Styling of an FCEV"
In other words, "Design a car of tomorrow that is powered by fuel
cell." 20th century type internal combustion engines for automobiles may
eventually disappear. The fuel cell that is used in space rockets is seen as the
most promising substitute power source for cars. There are many problems to be
solved before fuel cells become practical, but putting that aside, what form
will cars carrying this new type of power source have? Some of you may not know
exactly what a fuel cell is. If you don't, we ask that you do not simply guess,
but find out more about fuel cells through books or on the intemet before you
start working on the package. This should bring to light all the problems
associated with fuel cells. How to reflect this in the design? You will be
judged not only on the final model but also the process by which you arrived at
your solutions. What is most important is your understanding, not your level of
skills. For the age of the FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) to become a
reality, there will have to be changes in social structure as well. For example,
stations for supplying hydrogen will probably have to be set up. We hope you
will consider various hypotheses, select among them and build a vision of what
the future should be like.
Categories
Entrants will be divided into two categories: the Student Division and the
General Division. The student division is for those who will be registered in
university or college at the time of the final deadline for preliminary
screening; others will be entered in the general division. If the applicable
category is not clear, the contestant will be entered in the student division.
Schedule
The competition will begin with preliminary screening, followed by the final
judging.
Deadline for entries for preliminary screening: Entries must arrive at the
competition office by 17:00 on August 19, 2002.
Announcement of results of preliminary screening: CAR STYLING vol. 150 (on sale
October 19, 2002)
Deadline for entries for final judging: Entries must arrive at the competition
office by 17:00 on December 27, 2002. They can also be brought directly to the
Tokyo Auto Salon between 13:00 and 16:00 on January 9, 2003. They cannot be sent
to the Tokyo Auto Salon.
Entries for final judging will be displayed at the Tokyo Auto Salon (January 10
to 12, 2003).
Announcement of final results: January 10, 2003, at the Tokyo Auto Salon, and in
CAR STYLING vol 153 (on sale February 19, 2003).

English, no more than one A4 page of 30 lines.
