Dear Friends,
As a young artist in the mid 80¹s I competed in chainsaw carving contests
around the midwest. With the help of the local chamber of commerce we produced
the Chainsaw Carving World Championships in Hill City Minnesota. A skilled
publicist allowed us to receive international press for the event. I appeared in
USA Today Weekend and was on CNN headline news because of the event. Over the
last twenty years my career has evolved from carving at fairs to owning and
showing in galleries. I often describe it as having moved from the circus into
the theater. I have wanted to produce a sculpture contest more along the lines
of fine art than folk art for some time. Thanks to a commitment form Mayor
Kalisz¹s office the sculpture contest has become a reality. In addition to the
sculpture contest the Cherry building will be used for an indoor art fair. The
event will take place on Purchase street in The Historic Mid-City of New Bedford
this fall. The uniqueness of the event should draw spectators and much media
attention. Prize money will draw contestants. It is possible that this is the
first contest of it¹s kind anywhere. A free form, few rule, make what you can
with what ever you want sculpture contest! I am committed to putting in the
effort for a successful first event in our city this fall. I hope we can get ten
teams to compete the first year. The contest will allow around the clock working
provided teams alternate workers insuring a reasonable amount of rest. Judging
may prove difficult but I¹m planning to have contestants judge on a point
system based on specific factors. In carving contests this method was very
diplomatic and fair. I have asked additional people to be judges including Umass
professor of artisianry Alan Burton Thompson, and Art Critic David B. Boyce.
Sculpture Contest :
Initially I will contribute $2000 Cash prize money for the contest. As a
producer I will charge an entry fee to contestants and solicit more prize moneys
and prizes. Donations for prize money will be added to the purse. Donations will
be accepted in conjunction with promotion and I will be looking for sponsors.
The event will run on whatever budget we have to work with. There will be no fee
for viewers and as a producer I expect to make no money. I hope to advance our
cities position as a city of arts and culture and attract artist¹s and gallery
owners here. I hope to attract many people who have never been to our city to
patronize our businesses. With some luck we will attract some distant teams to
stay at our inns.
Competition Premiss:
Teams and individuals will compete to create sculptures in a specific time
period during October 4th through the 6th. The event will start Friday morning
at 10:00 and end Sunday afternoon at 2:00 with the judging to follow at 3:00.
The rules would allow judges to stop production or limit objects size if
structural strength or safety is in question. Also rules would require tasteful
subject matter for a family styled event. Sculptors could willfully create using
a verity of materials as long as no there are no pre-made components. An example
is wooden 2x4s in a standard length are acceptable although 2x4s 2¹ long with a
20 degree angle are not acceptable. I would also limit time on chainsaw running
to 2 hours per day to keep the noise down and not to create chainsaw carving
event. My goal would be to have the teams assemble and sculpt wood, foam,
plaster, concrete, paper mache, wire or resin types of materials. Assemblage of
existing objects like car parts would be allowed if parts are kept in tact. An
example is a car door is acceptable as a car part but a car cut in half not
acceptable. I am not considering the allowing of welding equipment and cutting
torches at this time but I will talk it over with city officials.
Judging:
The Judging will be consist of a point system. Contestants will receive points
on a scale of 1 to 10 in several categories. The categories pertaining to the
judging will be discussed with peers and defined soon. I would like to include
aspects of what is perceived as ³good art² such as composition, flow, negative
space and tension or the purposeful misuse of the ecstatic laws. Judges will
consider whether the objects created are an extraordinary example of the
creative process and use of the materials chosen. Also judges will be asked to
consider the objects significance with respect to art history.
Conclusion and help needed:
I hope this contest shines a positive light on our city and provides fun for all
who participate. I will be looking for artist¹s and teams to compete in the
sculpture contest. The entry fee for the contest is $150.00. I will be looking
for artist¹s to participate in the indoor art fair and both space there will
start at $25. I will be asking for help with promotion and raising money and
prizes. I will have much to do and I will stay very focused on the most
necessary in order to have this event be successful.
