Proposal
JOHN DINKELOO (1918-1981):
The Van Alen Institute Dinkeloo Fellowship honors John Dinkeloo and his
contribution to architecture. Dinkeloo, a long-term partner in Kevin Roche John
Dinkeloo & Associates, consistently expressed and applied his belief in the
crucial link between architectural design and technology in the partnership's
landmark achievements. He made possible a new scale and character for public
space as exemplified by The Ford Foundation atrium, which expanded the
definition of the public realm and the environment in the contemporary city.
AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME:
The American Academy in Rome is the only American overseas center for
independent study and advanced research in the fine arts and the humanities.
Inspired by America's contribution to the fine arts at the World's Columbian
Exhibition in 1893, a group including architects Charles Follen McKim and Daniel
Burnham resolved to create a center to study art amid the tradition of ancient
Rome. In 1894, the new American School of Architecture was founded in Rome. A
year later the American School of Classical Studies in Rome was formed by the
Archaeological Institute of America, and in 1913, a union between the two
Schools became what is now the American Academy in Rome. |
