Yarışma Özeti(Summary):
Housing for the Urban Poor
It is said that there are more than 1 billion homeless people in the world and there are nearly 2 billion people who are compelled to live in inadequate housing conditions. It is the purpose of the design competition to inquire into these communities of the urban poor / underprivileged people.

The student competitors are required to identify such a community in their own country or in any other country anywhere in the world. The community may be about 3000 to 5000 people or so and the site may be around 10 ha or less. The student participants shall study the community to understand the complexity of issues involved, and plan and design for its up-gradation / reconstruction / development.

The design requires planning and design for a community of about 1000 to 1200 dwelling units or so situated in a site covering a maximum area of about 10 ha. The housing typology and units may vary as per the social, economic and environmental context. The housing typology and units may vary from 15 sq.mt., 30 sq.mt., 45 sq.mt., 50 sq.mt. to 60 sq.mt. (three to five types) should be affordable to the urban poor, energy efficient and climate responsive.

The design of housing units, community structure, facilities, infrastructure, pedestrian and vehicular access and quality of living environment are the key concerns. The proposed plans and designs shall aim to evolve a more humane community through sustainable and affordable development strategy; appropriate construction and technology; and innovative planning , architectural and environmental design. These shall be the main criteria for evaluation.

The competition is open to all registered students of any nationally recognized school, college or institution of architecture. The participants may be individuals or teams of students. The student shall fill in the registration form and supporting certificate of the head / director of the school / college or institution of architecture.

The International Association for Humane Habitat (IAHH) a voluntary organisation promoting the goals and objectives of evolving humane habitat, through sustainable development, appropriate planning and innovative design,
is pleased to announce the 1st International Students Competition for planning and design for Housing for the poor. Rizvi College of Architecture is hosting the 5th annual International Conference on Humane Habitat at Mumbai, India. The conference is co-sponsored by the Brihan Mumbai Centre of the Indian Institute of Architects and the Forum of Colleges of Architecture, University of Mumbai, India. The competition is endorsed by the Commonwealth Association of Architects.

Submission Requirements:
The design submissions shall be presented on 6 A1 / 3 AO drawings which
shall include :
a. 2 A1 panels for contextual, social, economic and environmental analysis, site analysis of the existing community covering an area of a maximum of 10 ha showing its location in the urban context along with photographs.

b. One A1 panel for proposed community development plan scale
1: 500 / 1: 1000 for a community of about 3000 to 5000 people or more.

c. Three A1 panels for innovative designs for housing typology and units for families ( scale 1: 100) , clusters of houses / residences and supporting infrastructure and community facilities including for education, health care, cultural and social activities, sports and recreation, shopping, workplaces and local commercial establishment. ( scale 1: 250).

d. A brief report identifying the context, analysis, concept, planning and design approach of the proposal on not more than 10 A4 sheets.

e. The participants may send CDs containing the drawing and report for publication purposes. These CDs may be used by the jury for consideration of the Awards. However, the drawings must be submitted. CDs alone will not be acceptable.

Eligibility:
The competition is open to all registered students of any nationally recognized school, college or institution of architecture. The participants may be individuals or teams of students. The student shall fill in the registration form and supporting certificate of the head / director of the school / college or institution of architecture.

Terms and Conditions:
1. The participants shall assume a seven digit numerical code which shall be written in right hand bottom corner of the drawing in a 9cm x 9cm box .

2. A sealed envelop containing the identification form with the name/s of the participant/s and institution and the seven digit numerical code written within a
9cm x 9cm box shall be enclosed with the submission of the entry.

3. The drawing shall be in black and white and or colour and they shall be prints of the originals. No original drawing shall be sent.

4. The documents shall be sent by airmail / couriers and not be air freight companies.

7. The drawings shall not be returned as they shall be required for travelling exhibition and publication.

8. IAHH may bring out a publication documenting award winners and significant projects. The winning projects may be published in institutional and professional journals.

9. The jury shall have full freedom to decide on the awards and their decision shall be final and binding on all the participants.

Registration Fees:
The registration fee for entering the student competition shall be INR 1000
( for SAARC countries) or US $ 20 ( for other countries),
