Yarışma Özeti(Summary):
The ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition is an
ideas competition using a real site. This interdisciplinary problem-solving
exercise offers students a chance to mix creativity with functionality. The
site, to be announced in February, will be large scale and present complex
challenges, needing practicable, innovative solutions that reflect responsible
land use. The solutions are to be multifaceted, incorporating design, planning,
market potential and feasibility, and development strategies. The submission to
the competition will be a written report as well as a series of schematic
drawings.
The ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition is part of the
Institute’s ongoing effort to raise interest among young people in creating
better communities, improving development patterns, and increasing awareness of
the need for multidisciplinary solutions to development and design challenges.
This competition is an ideas competition; there is no guarantee or expectation
that any of the submitted schemes will be applied to the site.

Competition Schedule and Phases
The competition will be conducted in three phases.
Phase 1: The Application Process involves putting the team together,
providing ULI with the names and qualifications of all team members, and
submitting an application for consideration. Because the number of participating
teams will be limited, ULI reserves the right to disqualify teams or to limit
the number allowed to participate in the competition (in accordance with the
provisions described in the next section). All teams will be notified by E-mail
no later than Friday, February 14, 2003, as to their participation status.
Phase 2: The Submission Process is the phase in which the team works together
to respond to the urban design problem posed. Students will receive the project
briefing materials on Friday morning, February 21, 2003. The project briefing
materials will include a comprehensive problem statement, background information
on the site, market information, any relevant existing design proposals, maps,
etc. Teams will also be given a specific list of required presentation
materials. All materials must be received at ULI headquarters by 5 p.m. e.s.t.
on Tuesday, March 4, 2003. The jury will meet in mid-March and up to four
finalist teams will be chosen. The finalists will be announced by Friday, March
21, 2003.
Phase 3: The Urban Design Forum is the final phase, involving a maximum of
four finalist teams. From Friday, March 21, to Thursday, April 24, 2003, student
finalist teams will have the opportunity to expand their original schemes and
respond in more detail to the problem posed by the competition. Two members of
each team will be brought to the city where the site is located, with expenses
paid, and will have the opportunity to tour the site and meet with select
individuals in order to revise and enhance their presentations. On Friday, April
25, 2003, the entire team will, at ULI’s expense, return to the site city and
present its program to the jury as well as to invited guests, other students,
and appropriate participants. That day will culminate in the announcement of the
winner and the order of the finalists as well as include various prominent
speakers who will discuss urban design and development issues.
