An open international competition for the design of a new structure for Cleopatra's Kiosk located on the north bank of the River Thames in London.

The competition is being run on behalf of the owners of the existing Kiosk who are seeking an exciting and innovative design for their new structure which will be worthy of the unique setting and a tourist attraction in its own right!

History
In May 1940 Commander Coakley took his two Thames 'little ships' to rescue men stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk. One little ship was lost and the other badly damaged. To enable Commander Coakley to earn a living after the war the Port of London Authority (PLA) rented him a small piece of land on the Victoria Embankment. It was here that Coakley erected a kiosk from which to sell tickets for riverboats.

In 1960 Coakley wished to retire and contacted one of his relatives, Kate Stanton, to enquire if she would be willing to run the kiosk for him. Kate was excited and ran it with her other business interests for a year or two and increased the sales substantially. In the early sixties Kate's daughter, Julia Stanton, took over the running of Cleopatra's Kiosk and has been there ever since. During the summer season the Kiosk is open at least sixteen hours out of every twenty-four. For special events it is sometimes never closed and is open three hundred and sixty five days a year!

Background Information
To facilitate the construction of the Golden Jubilee pedestrian Bridge (Hungerford Bridge), promoted by the City of Westminster and borough of Lambeth it was agreed that the kiosk would be moved to a nearby temporary location to allow the business to continue whilst the footbridge construction works were in progress.

The existing facility was moved to the temporary site and has continued to serve its purpose but owing to the move and certain changes which were necessary to allow the kiosk to be sited at the temporary location, the fabric of the kiosk has deteriorated.

It has now been agreed by Westminster City Council that the whole of the area between the base of the brick railway pier and the steps leading from Embankment pier through the listed river wall will be leased to Samuel Alexander Ltd (the owners of the kiosk). A new structure will therefore be designed and constructed on this site.

The site is located to the north west of the Golden Jubilee Bridge on the Victoria Embankment opposite the Embankment Tube Station.
