countries.
IAHH is pleased to announce its SECOND INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DESIGN
COMPETITION on the theme of Re-vitalization of an urban area for an urban
community. The competition is open to students of architecture, planning, urban
design, landscape architecture and related disciplines of anthropology,
sociology, economics, geography, social work etc.
Hosts:
Rizvi College of Architecture is hosting the 6th International Conference on
Humane Habitat at Mumbai, India. The ICHH 2004 is being organized in association
with:
-The Brihan Mumbai Centre of the Indian Institute of Architects.
-The Forum of Colleges of Architecture, University of Mumbai.
-The Commonwealth Association of Architects is expected to endorse the
competition.
Theme:
In the wake of globalization and liberalization of world economic order, The
cities are undergoing a rapid transformation. While the urban growth continues
guided by policies and programmes of urban development, there are vast areas,
which have become economically and socially depressed, with dilapidated stock of
housing and work places and environmentally degraded.
It is the purpose of the second IAHH International Student Design Competition
to investigate into this issue of urban decay and degradation in order to evolve
a more enlightened approach to planning, design and management of
revitalization, restructuring, redesign, conservation and redevelopment of such
urban areas. This will facilitate regeneration of depressed urban communities.
The student competitors are required to identify such an area in a city /
town / metropolis in their own country or in any other country anywhere in the
world. The community may be about 1500 to 3000 people, with jobs for 500 or more
people. The urban area may admeasure about 10 hectare or so. The student
participants shall survey and study the area in depth to understand the
complexity of issues involved and plan and design for its revitalization and
renewal.
The design requires planning and design for an urban community of 500 to 1000
units of dwelling and about 500 or more jobs in different establishment suited
to the location and context. The housing typology and nature of work places may
vary as per the social, cultural, economic and environmental context. The area
and type of housing
units and work places shall depend on the existing and proposed demand for
housing and working in the area.
The proposed plans and designs shall aim to evolve a more HUMANE community
through SUSTAINABLE and AFFORDABLE development strategy, APPROPRIATE
construction and technology, INNOVATIVE planning, architectural and
environmental design. These shall be the main criteria for evaluation of the
projects.
The project proposal should not just be an isolated community, but a key
component of the city fabric and it should support elements of the city system,
by perhaps becoming an "SUSTAINABLE URBAN COMMUNITY" with a
neighborhood shopping core, walkable mixed use high-density housing, connecting
to either an express bus or light rail corridor.
The teams should show the connections with the city, as well as their
component, community design. The component design should also be a
"connector" to the larger city and that implies a "NODE"
which is a place of modal split between say express buses and pedestrians and
cycles. The community should have high enough densities to be EFFICIENT. There
should be a hierarchy of spaces engendering CONVIVIALITY. Diagrams will show
REGIONAL INTEGRATION.
Submission Requirements:
The design submission shall be presented on 6 A1 drawings / 3 A0 drawings
preferably mounted on foam-board which shall include:
1. 2 A1 panels for contextual, social, economic and environmental analysis,
site analysis of the existing urban area admeasuring about 10 hectare showing
its location in urban context along with photographs.
2. One A1 panel for proposed area development to the scale of 1:500/ 1:1000
for a community of about 1500 to 3000 people or more.
3. Three A1 panels for innovative designs for housing, work places and
related shopping and supporting social, educational, health-care and
recreational facilities to a scale of 1:100 / 1:200
4. A brief report identifying the context, analysis, concept, planning and
design approach of the proposal on not more than 10 A4 sheets in Arial 10 font
size with illustrations and photographs.
