AMD &ART, Inc. provides an innovative approach to
Appalachia's most blighting environmental liability: acid mine drainage (AMD).
Our nonprofit organization engages professionals from many disciplines to
explore innovative pragmatic ways of responding to this problem. The community
of Vintondale, a small coal patch town 15 miles northeast of Johnstown, has

abandoned mine land into a community park rich with educational and interpretive
content. An AMD passive treatment system, history wetlands and recreational area
were designed by a multidisciplinary team to address coal country's water and
land reclamation in dynamic new ways. This design competition will address a
critical moment in this larger project – the return of clean water into the
Blacklick Creek after being filtered through the passive treatment system.
Entries are due February 15, 2004. We seek entries from students currently
enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate programs. While there are no
restrictions on major, creative integration of art and science is preferred. We
encourage collaborative or team submissions as designs must respond to
hydrologic, cultural, historic, and economic landscape demands.
