Margate is situated in East Kent and is one of a series
of closely linked seaside towns. The Turner Centre is a culturally
led regeneration project, and the new Center needs to be a building of
real quality that will be an attraction in itself. The site offers
an opportunity to produce a design that not only works in its own terms
but also enhances the quality of its setting; a building that works as
architecture and urban design. The Turner Center will support and
extend the range of facilities in the town, and should act as a landmark
when seen from across the bay and strengthen the physical relationship
between the Old Town and the waterfront.
The competition will be held in two stages. Stage 1 will be a
general call for expressions of interest from architects, who will be
asked to provide details for their experience and design approach.
At stage two five short-listed practices will be invited to develop
design proposals, and will each receive a £10,000 honoraria (inc. VAT).
The competition is promoted by Kent County Council (KCC) working in
partnership with Thanet District Council. KCC is committed to
negotiating
the appointment of the winner as architect for the project.
The competition is open to architects, and international entries are
encouraged. Shortlist announcement will be made in April 2001
Applicants should apply in writing, enclosing a registration fee of £25.00
(checks should be made payable to: The North Kent Architecture Centre
Ltd) to the address listed below.
