ABLA is a public housing community comprised of four distinct developments constructed from 1937 to 1962. The housing development to be designed in this competition shall accommodate three income levels for a fully integrated mixed-income community that involves public housing units, affordable housing units and market rate housing. Regardless of income type, all units must be designed to high standards and physically indistinguishable. The housing development must be constructed for a specified number of units within a specific budget and should be easily maintained.

Specific competition requirements and criteria will be issued at the Housing Symposium conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago on March 20, 2001.

The open-call portion of the competition is open to licensed architects and architectural firms. Three architects will be selected by a panel of jurors and added to a list of four pre-selected architects on March 12, 2001. Each of the seven architects will be given an honorarium of $20,000 plus travel expenses to prepare a model, schematic plans and elevations for the proposed development. The seven competing architects will be required to participate in a Housing Symposium at the University of lllinois at Chicago and to present their designs at the Opening Ceremony at the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center.

One essay of 200 words or less describing the individual architect or firm's philosophy regarding the essence of house.

Five black-and-white or color images of built or unbuilt work. The images can be of residential, institutional, commercial, etc., but must represent the designer's design philosophy and applicable experience.

Submit three copies of each essay and image. All identifying marks must be concealed and secured to the rear of each image and essay in a sealed envelope.  Submissions received after 5 PM March 5, 2001, will not be considered.  Three architects will be selected to attend the UIC Housing Symposium on March 20, 2001.  The selected finalist will receive an additional honorarium of $15,000 plus the possibility to enter into an agreement with a developer for full architectural services from Design Development through Construction Observation.
