Yarışma Özeti(Summary):
As the start of the “Cusco´s Historic Center - Integral Rehabilitation Masterplan” contruction works, in which participate the “Municipalidad Provincial del Cusco” (MPC), the “Instituto Nacional de Cultura-Cusco” (INC-Cusco) and the “Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional” (AECI) institutions, is considered to renovate a relevant public space wich displays serious problems in use, function, ornamentation and identification within the urban context of the Historic Center.

The proposed public space for this first Pilot Project, is San Francisco de Asis Square area, that has singular importance because it is contextually defined as one of the most outstanding urban atmospheres of Cusco city. This open space is the second important after the Main Square context area and, at the present, is a link center within the city´s urban plot.

From last decades the San Francisco de Asis Square has received progressive deterioration, the consequence of transformations and changes in use. Between the multiple identified problems, the most representatives are : the urban transport, the pressure of ambulatory commerce, the generation of new uses and activities associated with massive transit of people. All this has lead to transform the “residential character” this precinct had initially.

To resolve this, the promotional institutions “MPC”, “INC-Cusco” and “AECI”, want to select the space intervention proposal through an International Ideas Competition, to obtain a good designed intervention to the Historic Center, allowing the participation of architects.

The analysis process and comparing of the different proposals in competition, must contribute to create and enrich a professional discussion about the future of the city´s Historic Center. Also this First Pilot Project will serve as an intevention model oriented to the recovery of the Historic Center of Cusco, the Historic Capital Of Peru.
