The theme, of "Continuous Connection" was chosen to guide us in
exploring new life-styles that are appropriate for the 21st century.
Under this theme, we look for designs/concepts that promote a sense of
connection  between persons, between people and nature, between people
and the everyday environment and between home and work. These are the
mechanisms that enable us to maintain a happy and harmonious
relationship with ourselves and with people and things around us.
Technology is fast changing the way in which we live. We believe that
the 21st century will force us to welcome the changes and at the same
time work consciously to seek, create and maintain human connections.

Objective

Continuous Connection / Design 21 invites young designers from around
the world to create and present a new vision for the way we live in this
new century. This is the fourth Design 21 International Design Award.
Co-organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization) and Felissimo Corporation, the award was launched
in 1995 with the idea of transcending national borders to promote a
creative force between the generations to shape our future. Young
designers are also encouraged to use design as part of a process of
creating a new lifestyle and as a tool to improve the quality of
self-expression and communication.

Theme

Categories

Fashion (including Fashion Accessories).

Home (including Home Accessories): Small items of furniture such as
tables, chairs, concepts of a small indoor space or garden, etc.

New Essentials: Concepts and items not covered by the foregoing yet
are part of today's and tomorrow's life-style: tools and gadgets
including communications devices, items for home office, travel goods,
food, etc.

Selection Criteria

It is used in everyday life.

It promotes a sense of connection and happiness.

It reflects a creative and responsible vision of life-styles appropriate
to the 21st century and beyond.

It shows awareness and respect for the environment, including choice of
materials and production techniques.

Organization

The administrative offices are located in Paris at UNESCO Headquarters
and at the Felissimo offices in New York and Kobe. The Pre-Selection
Committee and International Jury will be composed of design specialists
and cultural and opinion leaders in each domain.

Pre-selection of a maximum of 100 designers (20 in Fashion, 20 in
Fashion Accessories, 20 in Home, 20 in Home Accessories, and 20 in New
Essentials) will be done by the Pre-Selection Committee meeting in
Paris. Selected designers will receive financial assistance towards the
production/shipment of the models for the exhibition in New York.

The final selection will be made at the exhibition in New York by the
International Jury designated by the Director-General of UNESCO. The
Award Ceremony will take place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The
Jury's decision shall be final and without appeal.

Selected designers will receive financial assistance towards
production/shipment of models as follows:
u Fashion:US$ 500
u Home: US$ 1,000
(US$ 700 for United States residents)
u Accessories (Fashion/Home): US$ 200
u New Essentials: US$ 300

Awards

1 Grand Prix: US$ 10,000 to the best designer in all 3 categories.

** Prize-winners will be invited to the award ceremony (round-trip
airfare and accommodation will be provided by the organizers).
** Corporate Awards by sponsoring companies will be specified at a later
date.

Participation

Qualification

Selection is open to young designers up to and including 35 years of age
(as of 16 August 2001) who have not yet achieved international recognition.

Laureates of previous "Design 21" contests are not eligible.

The works submitted must be original works of the applicants.

Application

Candidates should fill in 2 copies of the Application Form (3 pages
including curriculum vitae and brief project description) for each
category and certify that the works being submitted are original works
of the applicants.

Candidates may enter more than one category, but only one entry per
category will be accepted.

Application is on an individual basis. In cases where entries are
organized by a school, a separate Application Form should be filled in
by each student.

The Application Forms accompanied by the design (see below) should reach
UNESCO by 15 August 2001. Any application received after that date and
any incomplete file will be considered ineligible for selection.
Candidates are requested to abide by the rules and schedule of the
competition.

Materials to be submitted for pre-selection

Participants are requested to submit the following materials for pre-selection:

Fashion/Accessory Categories: Only one design (with a colour chart
attached) will be considered per candidate (no model or 3D samples can
be accepted). The design should be presented on paper measuring 30 cm by
40 cm and carry the designer's name, address and telephone number on the
back to ensure anonymity in the judging process.

Home Category: A maximum of 5 drawings in colour of the prototype
will be considered per entry per candidate. Designs may be presented on
36 mm slides or CAD-generated graphics on standard letter size with the
author's name, address and telephone number indicated on the back.

New Essentials Category: A maximum of 5 drawings in colour of the
prototype will be considered per entry per candidate. Designs may be
presented on 36 mm slides or CAD-generated graphics on standard letter
size with the author?s name, address and telephone number indicated on
the back.

Materials to be submitted for final selection

Pre-selected designers will be contacted individually by the organizers
and requested to submit their work to the International Jury as follows:

Fashion Category: the Finished model should be submitted.
Home Category: The finished model or a 3-D prototype will be
accepted. It should not exceed 100 cm in size and 50 kg in weight.
Over-fragile objects that require special packaging/handling will not be
accepted. Breakables should be sent at applicant?s own risk in a
reusable, sturdy container.
New Essentials Category: The finished model or 3-D prototype will be
accepted. It should not exceed 100 cm in size and 20 kg in weight.
Over-fragile objects that require special packaging/ handling will not
be accepted. Breakables should be sent at applicant?s own risk in a
reusable, sturdy container.

** Finished models should be received in New York between 10 December

Rights and obligations

Designs remain the artistic property of the designers.

Felissimo and corporate sponsors have the right to negotiate with the
laureates regarding the eventual commercialization of their designs.

Designers entering the contest agree to absolve the organizers from any
liability relating to intellectual property issues, that may be raised
by any other party.

For the purposes of the Exhibitions, the organizers will be in direct
contact with the laureates for any necessary adaptation of their work
for technical reasons and production of finished models.

Candidates presenting pre-selected and prize-winning works authorize the
organizers to publicize their works using all means of communication
(press, television, video recording, exhibitions, etc.) and to keep the
finished models and the original design. Non- selected designs will not
be returned.

Insurance:

Designers should secure appropriate insurance coverage from their
countries of origin up to New York for any component deemed valuable
that is entered in the contest. The organizers agree to take due care of
all entry components, but will not accept liability for loss or damage
to property.

Transport:

The costs of shipping models to New York will be borne by the selected
designers.
