The site chosen is the Lochend Butterfly and its surroundings, which lies
about a mile from the eastern end of Princes Street in central Edinburgh.
Defined by railway lines the five hectare site is largely derelict, but
includes a loch, the last of a series of three, which is now the focal
point of Lochend Park. The City Council are keen to see a new vibrant
quarter of the city emerge and the Butterfly site represents the
opportunity for a sustainable mixed-use development, including industrial,
business, retail, and residential uses. Much recent urban regeneration has
taken place in areas surrounding the Butterfly. It also represents a
generic urban site with the potential to maximise the social,
environmental, and economic sustainability of the city.
