The Journal of Architectural Education invites submissions of innovative
design work and teaching that investigate problems and properties of
surface, understood broadly as the locus of intention and appearance.
Questions about surface emerge anew in contemporary digital media, material
technology, composition, and theory. The Journal seeks both conventional
and experimental design inquiries that explore the relation of surface to a
variety of experiences, issues, and conditions, such as space, structure,
enclosure, inscription, representation, ornament, topology, perception,
gender, and difference. Projects that use surface as a pedagogical tool, as
the vehicle for a probe, or as an element of process are welcomed. JAE
encourages alternative strategies for presenting design work, such as
interviews and other forms of collaborations between designers and critics,
writers, or scholars.
Submission Requirements
1. Seven (7) copies of a 4-page presentation of the project in 8.5" x
11" bound format. Supporting text of no more than 1000 words should
clearly and succinctly explain the project, its critical intentions, and how
it sheds light on the theme topic. As emphasis will be placed on graphic
explanation, visual material should be selected and coordinated to best
articulate the ideas pursued within a black-and-white print medium.
These 4-page presentations will be sent to jury members for advance review;
they will also serve to give a sense of how the project can be articulated
in finite form.
2. One portfolio of supplementary images and text in 8.5" x 11"
bound
format (max. 100 pages). This material will be reviewed at the Design Jury.
3. A selection of images from the supplementary portfolio in PDF format
(small files), if possible. These can be posted for advance review by jury
members.
4. A separate cover letter containing the names of the faculty
member(s), students, institution, address, phone/fax numbers, and email
address. No identification of designers whatsoever should appear on the
4-page presentation or the portfolio submission.
Submissions will be blind-juried by a panel of design educators and
professionals. Label the package "Design: Surface" and send to: Howard
Smith, JAE Managing Editor, 1400 Randall Court, Los Angeles CA 90065. For
return of materials, please include self-addressed and stamped envelope.
