With 285,000 inhabitants, Aarhus is the second-largest city in Denmark. Itis attractively located at the Bay of Aarhus, surrounded by water, rolling hills and large forests.

The city council has decided that one of the many areas in which the city is to develop is the Lisbjerg area to the north of the city. This area is located on a hill slope facing south and east in one of the Aarhus area's spectacular valleys, through which a small river runs. Three old villages are situated in the area: Lisbjerg, Ølsted and Trige. To the west, the area is delimited by the motorway connecting Aarhus and Randers; to the south, by the forthcoming motorway leading to the Djursland peninsula.

In order to obtain the best possible illustrations of the opportunities relating to this demanding planning task, the City of Aarhus will invite entries for an open ideas competition concerning the planning and design ofthe 550 hectare open area located six kilometres north of Aarhus city centre.

The competition is organised in consultation with the Federation of Danish Architects and will be open to international planners, architects and others. The language used in entries may be either Danish or English. The competition material will only be available in Danish.

Entrants will be required to prepare a structural plan for the entire competition area as well as a development plan for the first stage of the urban development project. This stage will include a new school for the area."
