B. Aim and Task "Search for a forward-looking concept"
Four individual sites within the city of Stuttgart were chosen for this
competition.
Applicants may only choose one.
Applicants are asked - whilst taking into consideration the surroundings and
special characteristics of their chosen site - to provide a design / concept /
idea for the site which meets the requirements of a place of remembrance for a
beloved person, for a place of contemplation, for farewells, burial and
mourning. Applicants are asked to consider the individuality of their chosen
site.
The use of coffins and urns for burial is not necessarily a key factor for
the design. The participant are expected to use their own imagination. lt is
possible that burial might take place outside the site.
There are no rules for the integration of rooms or buildings such as
crematorium, mortuary, morgue, equipment room, cafè etc. The integration of
such facilities is optional to the participants: consideration of such
facilities needs to meet the overall idea of the applicants' concept. However,
if such facilities are considered they have to be designed to meet the
individual characteristics of the chosen site.
The aim of this competition is to find a general prototype. The awarding
organisation is looking for a variety of designs / concepts / ideas suggesting
alternative arrangements beyond the traditional idea of a cemetery to rneet the
increasing individuality and cultural diversity of modern society.
As creativity, innovation and visions are the core of this design and idea
competition, the consideration of laws and regulations is not required. And yet,
participants may take a good look at them. The compulsory burial on a cemetery
may not be considered.
Nevertheless, participants must take into consideration that cemeteries are
part of cultural life and heritage. How do we define the cultural significance
of the final hour? The cemetery ot the future should be a place of remembrance,
consolation, farewell, remembrance, consolation, transition and permanence ....
C. Sites
Four sites within the city of Stuttgart were chosen for this competition. All
four have individual spatial and structural characteristics. Nevertheless, they
have overall characteristics relevant to the spirit and concept of this
competition.
The individual aspects of these four sites are intended to meet the
structural as well as cultural diversity of modern city life:
o inner city, centrally situated, where many people drive or walk pass, or
merely wait, rneet, work, shop, relax or rest
o at traffic junctions - situated where car-drivers and passengers of public
transport - e.g. of tube or trains - pass by giving this site only a short
glance; a restless place without peace and quiet.
o RuralI suburban sites situated between separate parts of the city and yet
highly frequented as place for recreation, situated near to a traditional
cemetery which will continue to exist as a place for funerals, final blessings
etc.
For these individual sites concepts tor the "Cemetery of the
Future" should be designed meeting the specific targets of B. Applicants
are asked to chose only one site. The approximate location of all sites may be
found in the official city map in the attachment.
